animation and right clicking

Wed Aug 15, 2018 3:06 am
Whenever I try animating there seems to be a problem with the frames. Instead of creating a new blank frame every time, I only can get additions to the first frame. For example, when attempting the bouncing ball animation, instead of the desired outcome, all that I could create was a bunch of circles on appearing on top of each other. This affects the onion skin as it never appears that there have been added parts. Now I have watched videos and they all make it very clear that you need to create a new frame by right-clicking on the first frame slot before you start. I have tried this and it hasn't worked. I don't know if it's because I'm using a laptop or if there is a setting I need to change, but if anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated!! I have loved all the work I have seen from this program so far and the drawing part itself is marvelous! So please and thanks!

There is often confusion when first creating animations in krita. Also, the UI has changed slightly from earlier versions so make sure you are using version 4.1.1.

Starting from new, Right click frame-0 in the timeline docker and Create Blank Frame (or you can click the Add Blank Frame icon in the animation docker). This creates an animation and the lightbulb icon will appear to the left of frame-0 to indicate that you have an animation and that the onion skins can now be used and turned on/off with this icon.

Draw the frame-0 content. Frame-0 on the timeline will turn dark blue to indicate that it has content.

If you want to draw the next frame as a separate drawing (e.g a distorting bouncing ball as it touches the ground), right click frame-1 then Create Blank Frame (or left click it and click the Add Blank Frame icon). Draw the content of frame-1, using the on-canvas onion skin display as a guide.

Then right-click frame-2 and Create Blank frame, etc, etc.

If you want the next frame to be a moved version of the current frame (e.g a bouncing ball in the air), right-click the next frame and Create Duplicate Frame (or left click it and click the Add Duplicate Frame icon). Then you can use the Move tool to move the frame content as required. etc, etc

You can select a range of frames with Cntrl-click then Shift-click on the range and do Copy/Paste actions. You can drag a frame around in the timeline.

Let us know if you have any further problems and good luck.

If I read this correctly, it sounds like you have Auto Frame Mode turned on.

There is a button in the Animation docker to turn this off.

I face the same problem.. I have followed the following tutorial:

1. New document
2. Right-click the first frame >> create blank keyframe
3. draw on the layer

but after I did that, the 1st frame holds until the last frame (1st frame blue, the rest is with a blue line as stated in the Krita Manual: these holds are now clearly shown with a colored line across all held frames)

Please help! I have tried installing Krita's previous versions, but the problem still occurs. Is this a bug? :'(

I really want to animate using Krita :(

Your help is really appreciated... Thank you!

@etalonvenoir

2. Right-click the first frame >> create blank keyframe

It's actually 'Create Blank Frame'.

Yes, it does show a blue line across the rest of the frames and that first frame you have drawn will be repeated for the entire duration of the animation. This is because that's all you've done so far and you need to produce more (different) frames for the rest of the animation. So, right click the next empty frame and click Create Blank Frame or Create Duplicate Frame and then use the Paint or Move tools to produce that next frame.
