Wacom Intuos 5 Issue /w Krita

Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:03 am
Wacom Intuos 5: PTH - 450 (6.3.29-6 & 6.3.30-6 Drivers Installed)

So I recently started using Krita and I love it, but I ran into one problem that is very frustrating. I have a smaller tablet so it registers hand movement more vastly to larger ones making it very hard to draw precisely. My options are to zoom in quite a lot and draw bigger images but that is more work and the quality drop off is big when zooming. The issue I'm having is the "Precision Mode" built into my tablet does not function in Krita. It will activate, but it will not abide to the boundary box of the feature, which I'm used to in Photoshop. I've tried contacting Wacom, but they have yet to get back to me, figured I'd see if it was a know problem or if there is an easy fix for it.

Other info: If I change the hotkey on my pen to precision mode and leave the window open then draw in Krita the Precision Mode will work for 5 secs then forget it's there. I have use Windows Ink set on the Tablet settings because it was not working well or at all without it toggled. Sometimes when I use Krita for extended periods to the tablet stops functioning (the buttons not the pen) then I have unplug the tablet and plug it back in to fix.

Might just have to wait for Wacom, but if you got any ideas feel free to let me know, and thanks for your time :).

I'm sorry, but this is the first time I've actually heard of a "precision mode" in wacom tablets.

"Precision Mode" is described in the Intuos 5 User's Manual and it has the effect of requiring greater pen movement to cause the screen cursor to move a particular distance. It's a variable/adjustable effect and is set up in the Wacom control utility. It can be toggled on/off by an assigned tablet tool button.
As such, it seems to be a function of the Wacom driver which causes the driver to produce fewer movement notifications and at smaller reported displacements for a given stylus path. This would be nothing to do with Krita or any other application being used.

"Wacom Intuos 5: PTH - 450 (6.3.29-6 & 6.3.30-6 Drivers Installed)"

You seem to have two Wacom drivers installed. This is probably not a good idea and you should Uninstall the oldest one. If that doesn't help, uninstall the newest one and try installing the oldest one. Always restart your computer after uninstalling or installing a driver.

Are you using Windows? The Intuos 5 User's Manual refers to Windows XP, Vista and 7 and also refers to Office 2007. So, have the drivers been updated for Windows 8 and 10 or are you still on Windows 7?

It would be useful to read this section of the Krita Manual:

*Precision Mode: is a feature on the Wacom tablets that makes the screen hit-box smaller which essentially on a smaller tablet (makes it feel larger without actually doing so) would be equivalent to lowering your DPI on a mouse to get more precision out of it. Video if you need more info on how it works: (https://vimeo.com/54638797)

*Windows has been pretty good about deleting and updating Drivers on my Wacom tablet in the past, but just in case... I followed your advice and I used the official Wacom guide to manually delete my older drivers: (https://wacom.com/en-nl/support?guideTitle=How-do-I-uninstall-(manually)-and-re-install-the-Wacom-driv-r-on-Windows-for-a-Pen-Tablet%2C-Pen-Display%2C-or-Pen-Computer%3F&guideId=ce67b2c8-4f6f-47c8-93cd-4c6581992d1c). So a no to your first question about the 2 drivers being installed. It ended up being the same results, and the pen cursor just ignores the restricting box in precision mode as if I were just drawing normally.

*I'm on Windows 10 so I would assume all my older drivers needed for older versions are a part of the newer update. On the Wacom website (https://wacom.com/en-nl/support/product-support/drivers) 6.3.30-6 is the latest driver and if you click the link below Latest Drivers you will see that Intuos 5: PTH - 450 is on the list of compatible tablets for that driver.

*I read most of your last link as well. The only thing I could see being a problem is maybe my Razor Naga Mouse &! Keyboard could be interfering somehow, but it works fine on Photoshop Elements 10. So I don't know why it would interfere with one program and not the other unless you guys are at war lol.

Other Info: I've contacted Wacom finally and they pretty much said that "If the issue only happens in Krita, this could be a compatibility issue between the latest driver and Krita. I could not guarantee you that there will be fix for it since Krita is an open source program, and we do not contact with them directly to work on a fix, like we do with Adobe." So I guess I have to just use both programs if I want the most out of it or deal with the faults of one over the other until I can save up enough money for a giant tablet :/.

Thanks for the help and fast responses but I guess this post is closed unless someone does know a solution.
