Display tablet for Linux

Tue Sep 18, 2018 10:34 pm
I've been scratcching my head whether to post it here, but I doubt I'll get such a high chance of getting good answer anywhere else, as here come the people that actually use this stuff.
So - what are your experiences with display tablets on Linux? Are there any brands you'd recommend?

I know Wacom Cintiqs are pretty well supported under Gnome (and DEs based on it) with all the settings / calibration etc and okeyish to bad on other DE's (well but at least you have CLI tools that work anywhere).

What about other brands? Which ones are ok and which ones to avoid? Also I wonder how do you calibrate those / set those up? Also will they work with the same apps that work with Wacoms? If not is there a way to fool them into thinking they're dealing with Wacom?
Lastly (and I guess it might be the hardest) - as some of those offer more than 2K of pressure sensitivity is there a driver setting that would limit it? I'm asking as some apps fail miserably if you have Wacom drivers with more than 2K enabled (guess one of the reasons more recent ones have a command line switch to force a pressure limit). I'm worried that it might be the case with non-Wacoms as well.

I'm looking into getting one and Cintiq is rather out of the question (the old one I have is sadly borked - with one vertical and one horizontal bar where it is not reading pen) - even though I'm hunting for a used one.

Hello,
i'm not a Linux user but i think the main problem is "drivers" (dipaly tablet or classic tablet).

Maybe you can find some advices on David Revoy website :

or here for examples :

For any non-wacom on Linux, the first stop (and usually the only one) should be at the Digimend project, and the only brand that has been in contact with the developer is Huion (not sure if others have approach him in the last year or so), making that brand the only kind of officially supported one.

Now I know that regular huion tablets work out of the box even without any driver but the kernel module libinput, but I'm not sure if that's the case for display tablets, I remember reading some people using them on Linux but never got too much input regarding its full compatibility, example here https://github.com/DIGImend/digimend-ke ... issues/169

And at this point, due to its popularity, not sure how much budget friendly they still are.
Disclosure: I'm using a huion tablet 1060 on archlinux, in case of sense of bias.
