Autosave file

Mon Nov 05, 2018 2:12 pm
Did Krita remove Autosave file when you choose No to open autosave file ?

And what is different between .kra~ and autosave file ?
I thought autosave 'd save to .kra~

Krita suddenly closes often so I autosaves every 3mins.
I don't want Krita to removes autosave file.

When you hit "Save", Krita checks if there is a file with the same filename. If yes, it copies it to filename.kra~ and the current file saves to filename.kra. So the filename.kra~ file contains the content of the filename.kra before the save action.

When the autosave hits, Krita saves your file as .filename.kra-autosave.kra (with the dot at the beginning). On Linux systems dot at the beginning of the name means that the file is marked as "hidden". (It is different when you don't have a filename for Krita to base on (i.e. you haven't saved your image yet); Krita uses some numbers to differentiate between those files and shows it at the beginning to let you continue to work on them).

That's basically it. It can get more complicated if you use "Save incremental backup" and "Save incremental version", but it just adds some numbers to the filename so it doesn't replace the filename.kra, but creates a new file with new version. I strongly recommend you to check out "Save incremental version" feature - I like it very much.

If you choose "No" the autosaved file will be discarded here (Ubuntu).
A backup file can be useful if the original file becomes unusable for some reason. It is silently created by Krita when you save the changes of an edited document.
An autosaved file can be useful if Krita crashes and you need to recover the lost document. It is automatically created by Krita every a certain amount of minutes.

I am on Windows 10 and that's what happened to me.
I want manual control of autosave file. I don't want Krita to discard file automatically.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Hi gui-m,

could you explain why you want to keep the autosaved file?
If your goal is just to collect multiple snapshots of your artwork have you tried "File > Save Incremental Backup" (F4 key)?

I want Krita to autosave because Krita crashes sometimes. I also forget to save when I am too focus in drawing.
Also keeping autosave file's fool-proof.
Like me, I chose No when Dialog poped up because I didn't know about that.
Result is file disappeared
There should be some UX improvement in that area.

Do you have an advice on how to improve it?
Could be enough a warning line, like:
An autosaved file exists for this document.
Do you want to open the autosaved file instead?
The autosaved version will be discarded if you choose "No".

That line'd be helpful.

Also about button, I think "Yes,Discard,Cancel" would be appropriate.
Because "No" is not clear. "No" for me is I don't want to open the file. But if "No" does is discarding file it should be named something else.
Not "No"

I think you need to contact devs on IRC or open a wishbug then.
Renaming the "No" button to "Discard" would be clear enough for me too.
Thanks gui-m!
