Tilt not working on Krita "SOLVED"

Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:43 pm
Hello,
I am new to using Krita, I just installed it on my Dell Precision M6800 laptop that is running Window 10 Pro and I currently use a Wacom Intuos 5. Along with painting I also do a lot of sketching with both pencil and charcoal and need my digital art program to simulate using the side of the led that gives you a broader stroke when shading areas as well as the tip. So far I have not gotten Krita to use the tilt functionality of my Wacom tablet to work. I do not have this problem when using Art Rage or Painter 2019. Does Krita support this? I hope so because I am seriously considering moving away from using Windows as my main OS and using Linux. This is the reason I installed Krita because I was told that Krita runs natively on Linux and wanted to see if Krita would meet my needs before making the switch to Linux. I have a new Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 pen display on order and hope that this will also work with Krita, does anyone know if it will work? Oh the other thing I was wondering about is if Krita will support my Wacom Art pen's rotation function (I have not tried this yet as I seem to have temporarily misplaced this pen).
Thanks for you assistance,
Robert

Yes, krita supports tilt. I've never seen it not work out of the box. Not all presets use it, though. The art pen rotation is also supported.

Thanks for replying to my post, are the presets you mention the settings for each of the brushes? I had selected one of the pencils and expected it to work but it did not. Can the brush settings be edited to add this functionality? If so are there any tutorials on how to do this or to create new brushes? I also was wondering if the development team has any plans of adding touch functionality to Krita, it the programs that I use that supports this it is great because the canvas can be easily rotated with out rotating the whole tablet, this is not too much of a problem with the smaller tablets but increases with difficulty for the larger tablet displays. Wacom does have a fancy new stand for the new Cintiq Pro 24 and 32 inch tablet displays that makes it easy to rotate the display but the major down side is that they want $500 USD for just the stand.
Also I wanted to pass along my thanks and appreciation for the developers of Krita, I had tried it out a few years ago however at that time it was kind of buggy. I have been using Krita more since I posted my question and from what I see it is every bit as good as Corel's Painter, no it is better because it does everything that Painter can do and it is open source software. It does not have as many brushes but I really have not searched for any additional brush sets yet either.
Thanks for your assistance,
Robert,

PS I also wanted to mention something about KDE unrelated to Krita. On Linux my preferred desktop environment has been KDE for a number of years but there is something that I noticed fairly recently that I never needed in the past and that was scaling of the screen without changing the resolution. Out of all the desktop environments I have used including Windows of any version the way KDE handles this is far superior to anything out there. I am retired and find myself doing a lot of my computing and PC gaming from my sofa using my 4K UHDTV as my monitor and using KDE I can easily scale all of the desktop elements to just the right size from the size of the text along with the windows and widgets.

Hey, in the Krita 4 default brushes; you'll find the preset supporting Tilt/Rotation with two little arrow on the corner of the thumbnail of the brush.
( https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... undle.html )

To use the tilt; you need to setup the sensors of a desired effect. For eg. If you need to deform the Size when you tilt; activate "Size" in the brush editor, and then activate the Tilt sensors. They are described here: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... nsors.html . All available option (Size, Opacity,etc... ) are described here: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... ngine.html .

I guess the easier way will be to just select a brush preset with already Tilt setup ; and then look how it is done directly in the brush editor.

Also, you can go to Setting > Configure Krita > and turn the Outline Shape to "Tilt Outline" to see in real time how Krita understand the tilt/rotation of your stylus.

Yes -- it's a per-brush setting. https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... undle.html has details on each brush. Pencil-5 Tilted uses tilt by default. Tilt is detected by the sensors part of the brush preset editor: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... light=tilt

For instance, select the "Size" parameter, and you'll find 4 tilt options.

The manual has some information on creating brush presets, but the best introduction is the one that comes with Ramon Miranda's Digital Atelier brush preset bundle and tutorial video: https://krita.org/en/item/introducing-d ... al-videos/

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the info about brushes especially the links you provided. I will be checking these out probably tomorrow since it is already 11:30pm when I saw your replies. Once I get used to how Krita works, the UI etc it will probably become my default art program.
Have a great day,
Robert
