Krita doesn't save when I click save, no autosave file

This has happened to me twice now. I close a file after finishing drawing, and when I open it again all the progress I'd made before has been lost. I save very often (either through ctrl + s or the save button in the left corner) and have the autosave function set to every 4 min.:

I found three files on my computer (two with the same name) and one "autosave.kra":

But they are all the same inside (without the progress)?

I also clearly remember that I clicked "yes" and "save" before closing the document because this window popped up like this:

Anyone know how to get the lost file back and prevent this from happening? I use Krita 4.17 and last time this happened was also while using Krita 4.17. Is this some weird bug that hasn't been fixed and should I just re-install the previous version as this has never happened before?

If the files have the same name then they must be in different folders. Could there be some confusion about which folder you're working in and the folder you saved to and the folder that your previous work is stored in?

In the screenshot image you link to, the autosave file has '[Recovered]' at the end of its name. Did you have a crash so that krita found it when you restarted and offered to recover it for you?

If krita found an autosave file, why does your post title say ".... , no autosave file"? It's a confusing situation.

I don't think so? I searched my computer and they were the only files I could find. If I saved on the wrong file one of them at least would have my progress saved.

No, I didn't have a crash at all, and just closed the program normally.

Well, it found an autofile save, but the file hadn't saved my progress at all. Shouldn't the file had autosaved the last three hours of work since I had it set to save every 4 min.? Maybe a more accurate description would be "faulty autosave file".

Could you tell us something about the folder that you saved into? Is it perhaps linked to the cloud/google drive/dropbox? Because we did have an issue with folders that synced, but that was fixed in 4.1.3... Other things to look at is whether you saved in the windows temp folder by accident, or whether your disk is full or whether you have permission to save where you're saving. Or whether you have an antivirus that is silently blocking Krita?

You can get older versions here for what it is worth. I'd really like to know if going back to 4.1.5 fixes things, because then we know this is a bug introduced in 4.1.7 and can actually try to fix it.

Yes, I actually have all my files saved in the cloud/OneDrive! Could that be the problem? I also have an antivirus installed. How do I check if it's silently blocking Krita?
I could try to go back to krita 4.1.5. as the problem is very recent. Never experienced anything like that with the previous version...

hm... well, what you could do is to turn off your antivirus temporarily and then try to see if you can get Krita to create an autosave or just regularly save. If that works, Krita is being blocked by the antivirus.

You can also try the opposite, saving into a non-onedrive folder with antivirus enabled. If that works, then we still have issues with saving to syncing folders. The problem is that this bug got introduced in 4.1 when we introduced background saving, so I am wondering why 4.1.5 would not be affected but 4.1.7 would...

Hey, I have the exact same problem, it happened exactly as it happened to you. I saved my work as usual, But within two weeks two works are lost, The first time I thought I had forgotten to save.
For my last drawing I drew 10 hours and saved it several times but today only the basic sketch lines are left, It's unbelievably frustrating.

Did you find a solution or do you know why it happened to you? Are your lost works forever lost now?

Hello, this also happened to me, but I'm glad to say I was able to recover my file. I found it in my pictures section with the same name as it originally was. I just searched it and found two and one was the original while the other was the one I worked on. Hope this helps!

I too had the same problem. I clicked save as and when I hit save all my progress just completely disappeared, and when I go to files at first it shows the folder like normal but when I try and click on it it tells me the file does not exist. I’m pretty sure my krita recently updated and this is my first time using it since so maybe it’s a bug?

@palmtoptiger With the confusion between 'Save As' and 'Save', and between 'folder' and 'file', it sounds like you saved it in a folder that you weren't aware of and are looking in the wrong place.

Krita doesn't update itself. You have to manually get and install an updated version yourself.
