Hi, just wanted to ask if there are some plans on implementing texture variations in the brush menu. I have tried the the random vertical/horizontal offset. But I did not see the random per tip brush pattern. Therefore It looks like paper texture rather than brush texture and that promotes a rather digital look. Will be very beneficial if this feature is considered.

There's a great variety of things you can do to create randomness.
1. Use an animated brush set to random. 2. Use random offset on the textures(you mentioned this) 3. Use a fuzzy sensor for the brush tip rotation or mirroring. 4. Use a masked brush |

As for the random offset texture, when does the randomization happens? Does it happen per tip? I seem to not properly understand the effect of it.

By 'random offset texture', do you mean the Scatter property in the General group in the brush editor?
Learning to use the brush editor is not a trivial task but it's not too difficult. When you activate a brush characteristic, it defaults to being controlled by the pen pressure. You can change that to being controlled by various things (singly or in combination), including being random per 'dab', this is the 'Fuzzy Dab' option. The exact behaviour is determined by the transfer curve displayed when you select the control source and you can change the shape of the transfer curve. It's not a small subject area but you can make a start by reading the manual: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... ht=scatter then you can use the brush editor to make changes to brush characteristics to see what can be done. |

I guess you mean the patterns? I myself haven't been able to figure a way to randomize it either (I'm almost certain it can't), the best work around is to use masked brushes instead of patterns as suggested above, to create that sort of effect. It is noticeable when one try to cover large areas with the stroke, like when coloring or filling, on the other hand, the pattern works well with line strokes though, as you may not be able to see the "repetition" of it, also when is meant to cover areas as such (a pattern), all in all I think texture randomness comes better from brush tips than patterns. Just a thought.

Yes!! I am talking about that! Even though it says randomize offset I don't seem to see the effect. Either it is not working properly or it is very subtle. But good brush texture is very essential part of the digital painting. I hope they improve it. Going with dual brush can be a solution, but I really do hope they implement the per tip texture effect.
No, By random offset texture I mean the random offset option in pattern of the brush editor. |

I see what you mean about the random offset of the pattern option. This does a random offset on every stroke, not every dab. I don't know if that's intentional or a mistake. Then again, patterns are intended to be repetitive so this may be the best randomisation option.
You could raise a 'wishlist' bug to have per dab/stroke made as an option, but in the meantime there are many other possibilities to explore within the brush editor. |

I do concur that would be neat to have the sensors options for patterns, and like you I don't know if the offset actually takes effect, still, as ahabgreybeard mentioned, it kinds of defeats the purpose of having a pattern as they are not meant to be random. Now, if you copy the Krita or any pattern files to the brushes folder (either directly or through the brush editor interface), you will have them available for masked brushes as brush tips, there you can use plenty of sensors and parameters to create a random stroke, like rotation + fuzzy dab. Its an extra step, but once done you will have plenty of options available.

necroFYI: The random offset does work (v4.4.1) on the canvas, just not in the scratchpad area (except each time you exit/renter the brush dialog).
