Restore default brush tags without resetting whole Krita?

I accidentally deleted some of the tags for the brushes.

I want to restore it to default but I don't want to reset all the customizations I've already done to Krita over the months I've been using it. Is there a way to do this?

From your screenshot, I assume that you mean the tags for the brush presets (painting tools). The brushes (tips/bristles/stamps) have their own separate tags.

The complicated way to fix this is to edit the .xml file that contains the tag configuraton/listing/mapping for the brush presets. This is not difficult but it is very confusing if you've never seen it before. I recommend that you try it one day just for fun (after you've made a backup).

If you'd be happy to just restore it to the default state then you can do that with some simple folder/file surgery:

Close krita, go to ~/.local/share and in there is the 'krita' folder. That contains your resources as you can see by looking inside it. In there, inside the 'tags' folder is a file called 'kis_paintoppresets_tags.xml'. That is the file that controls/determines the tags for your brush presets. (Open it with your text editor and decide if you'd like to try doing detailed editing. You might like the idea.) That is the file you want to replace with a fresh default version.

Delete the 'kis_paintoppresets_tags.xml' file and run krita. This will recreate that file in a default state.

Whenever you're happy with what you've got, it's a good idea to make a backup copy of that krita resources folder and also to make backup copies of the configuration files, which are called 'krita*' that are stored in the ~/.config folder. That way, you can restore to a known good state after any problems.

That seems to have done the trick, thanks! And yeah backing up is a good idea!
