For some reason I just realized that some UI fonts have changed in Krita. I'm not sure what I did to change it but I can't seem to figure out how to put it back.

I'm still on the stable 4.1.7 on Linux. I didn't change my system's default fonts either

Did you accept or initiate any kind of system update? Or install a new application or system software of any kind?

I may have but so far only Krita seems to have the new changed font though

I'm not sure if the case is the same with 4.1.7, for the 4.2 the theme was "hard-coded" to circumvent some qt/breeze problems, don't know if this change was back-ported, that would change the font and ui to match "fusion" theme.

In my ~/.config/kritarc file, the only reference to 'font' is the default font for the SVG txt tool so I don't think it's because of any changes in there.
Also, as far as I know, there is no way of selecting or controlling fonts in the krita Settings.
Changing all my system fonts has no effect on the appearance of a 4.1.7 appimage that I downloaded in December of last year, but it does have a very visible effect on everything else.
I've no idea how or where krita gets its fonts from.

I'm using the Krita Lime PPA on https://launchpad.net/~kritalime/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

At the moment, all krita downloads are slow and some are failing. This may be my browser and/or my internet but I doubt it.
Can you try downloading the 4.1.7 appimage (remember to set permissions to let it execute) and try that?
Remember to backup your config files and resources folder before you do, as a precaution.
After you've backed them up, you might try deleting the config files to get a fresh/default configuration.
I use a variety of appimages and have never had any problems but I'm not sure if the Lime PPA version does anything differently.
I also suggest you try the latest 4.2.0 pre-alpha appimage at https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krit ... age_Build/ because it's shiny and new and may be interesting for you.

If I'm not mistaken the font/UI theme comes from the system itself, there is no customization within Krita except for the color scheme. The AppImage doesn't follow (a least fully) the system theme and fonts either since it comes with all the required side software/libraries to run regardless of what is on the local systems and what theme is been chosen.

Since the OP mentioned the PPA, I'm thinking that the issue is what I mentioned earlier, the theme Breeze was "locked" (this can only be reverted if you build locally, not a Krita user configuration) and thus you will see a slight change of font/UI on Krita.

The breeze theme is the only one that was "locked", Krita will try to default to Fusion, and if not present then Plastique, and if not present my guess is that whatever other themes are installed will follow (I'm not sure if Fusion/Plastique get packed along Krita, probably not).

Lastly, although unlikely but not impossible is that the OP accidentally removed a packaged (either manually or because dependencies/updates) that contained the font.

I'm a bit iffy when it comes to trying out beta builds because I like my software as stable as it can, especially something like Krita that I rely on heavily for what I do 😅️

I have had no issues with Krita's UI fonts until very recently and I've had 4.1.7 installed forever so I think it's indeed something to do with a f*ck up on my part. I just don't know how I f*cked up nor how to fix it (still relatively new to Linux)

You could download and try the 4.1.7 appimage, i.e. the latest official release at https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/

Would it conflict with my already installed copy in terms of brush presets, shortcut bindings etc? I just don't want to lose my customizations

Ah! I just checked the ppa link and indeed there is no new version since december, thus not the issue I've mentioned.

Things to check is difference between qt and gtk apps, not sure how many besides Krita you use that are qt based.

I haven't used gnome/ubuntu in years but I assume there must be part of the theme settings that points to what qt apps use, fonts included.

ahabgreybeard suggestion on using AppImages still is a good choice if the fonts are terribly bad, (even when the appimage will define its own), you can get any version available and use them interchangeably, this as a work around while you figure what went wrong with the system fonts.

I just checked qBittorrent which I assume is Qt based (based on the name) as well as Telegram but they both look the same as always. I have other Gtk applications too and no problems there either. Only Krita seems to be affected by having the serif font which is really odd.

It's highly unlikely that it will but if you backup your config files and resources folder then it won't matter if it does because you can restore them later.

Where does Krita store it's configuration files? I tried renaming

but it seems it retains things for example, instead of the default dark theme, it still uses the bright one I set manually. It also still has all my recently opened files in check
