Hi. I've been using Krita for a few months now, & until recently, I was having minimal issues with the program. But lately, I have been having all sorts of trouble with it. I've tried searching to see if anyone else has been having the same problems as I have & have had no luck. The last post I made on the forums did not even get a single answer. And so far, the forums have not been helpful at all. It all started a couple of weeks ago, & I am completely baffled by the situation. I started having issues with a different project I was working on, & when I created new files, everything seemed to work fine again at first, & I thought that there may have been something wrong with the file. But now, I'm having the same issues all over again. And for some reason, I'm only having these issues with the animation features. I experience little to no issues with still illustrations.

Here's what happens whenever I try to animate in Krita now: At first, everything works fine. I'm usually able to finish inking all the frames, & the issues usually start happening during the coloring process. When I start coloring, I usually have 3 layers, & the bigger the file size is, the more unstable the program becomes. And it tends to crash if the file reaches over 2.1 GiB. And whenever I open the file again after I close it, Krita stops responding for a couple of minutes before finally opening the file. I don't know why this is happening, because I've worked on files much bigger in Krita with no issues before. I can decrease the file size by merging two layers together whenever possible, but this does little to nothing to help, & Krita often becomes unresponsive when the layers are being merged, The brush tool starts lagging so badly that I can't draw anything. And I can't play my animation either. Whenever I try, I usually get the "memory limit is reached" error. I went into my settings & maximized the memory limit, but that did not do anything. And I have only played the animation in the file I am currently working on a total of two times. It only has about ten frames with minimal animation (just some grass blades blowing in the wind). And my plan was to make the animation into a simple loop, but when I copied & pasted another (approximately) 10 frames, my file size increased from around 2.0 GiB to 2.9 GiB, & then it crashed. My file only had one layer, as well. But that's not even the strangest part, whenever I use Krita now, it slows down my computer, too. It's so slow that I can't even use my web browser while Krita is open. And after Krita crashes, my computer runs so painfully slow that I cannot get anything done, & sometimes, I'll even have to forcefully shut it down by holding the power button because I can't even get the start menu to open.

When I first started using Krita, it instantly became my favorite animation program. But now, it's running so slow that I can't even finish half a second of animation without it crashing. I have no idea how this started or why it is doing this, & I have no idea how to fix it.

I have tried absolutely everything I can think of. I've tried re-starting Krita. I've tried restarting my computer. I've tried uninstalling Krita, restarting my computer, & then installing it again. I've tried installing Krita Plus. I have tried everything I can think of & nothing works. I have been searching all over the web to try & find a solution, & I cannot find anything that helps.

I really like Krita & I want to keep using it. I'm also too broke to afford a paid program at the moment. But for some reason, Krita is acting really strange all of a sudden, & I can't get it to work properly no matter what I try. It is incredibly frustrating, & I am at my wit's end! This whole situation is driving me absolutely bonkers & is causing me so much unnecessary stress it's making me want to tear my hair out!

For goodness sake, can somebody please help me figure out what's going on & how I can fix it?!

I've asked you quite a few definite simple questions about your situation and you seem to be unable to give answers.

You need to give definite simple answers to the definite simple questions that you've already been asked.

I'm sorry. ^^' That was my bad. I thought that because I didn't get a notification about my posts being answered that they were not answered. And after you replied to my second to the last post, I didn't go back to any of my posts to check for new answers like I should have. That was a dumb mistake on my part. ^^' Seeing as how I haven't seen anyone else experiencing these exact issues with Krita before (Although, I have seen some people complaining about it running slow on their computers), I think the issue may be with my computer & not Krita itself.

My computer is a few years old & can be pretty sluggish at times, even after cleaning it out with a PC cleaner (specifically Ilo System Mechanic). And I noticed that when I tried Krita Plus, it was even more unstable than the main current version of Krita. I think the problem may be that the latest versions of Krita are too heavy for my current computer to handle. But I'm not sure. I tried downgrading to Krita 4.03 last night, & when I saw you replied to this post, I tried opening my file to see if it worked. It was very slow at startup & then it crashed. I couldn't even get it to open the file. After I clicked on the file I wanted to open, it froze & then crashed. My browser also froze a couple after I shut down the program. I tried it a second time, & it did the same thing. So, maybe I need to upgrade instead of downgrade? I'm honestly not sure what I need to do.

Here is my system information. I hope this helps:

Intel Core i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz
4.0GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000

What do you think would be the best version of Krita to try with a computer like this?

That seems to confirm that it's your 'image' size that is about 2GB, not your 'file' size. (The 'file' is the something.kra item that is stored on your hard drive).

Your computer has 4GB of RAM and Windows 10 needs 1.2GB of RAM to do its own activities. That leaves 2.8GB available for any running applications and their data.

Krita needs about 0.5GB of RAM for itself (just to exist) and any image storage requirements are added to that. So, that leaves about 2.3GB of RAM available for krita to store a working image in.

If you're running a browser, that will need about 0.25GB of RAM or more depending on how many and what websites are open in it. So, there would only be about 2GB of RAM available for krita to use for the working image.

This is not surprising.

Different versions of krita would have very minor differences in base RAM requirements so there's no point trying them and the 'best' version to use is always the current stable release.

The best thing you can do is have an extra 4GB of RAM added to your computer. That would cost about £20 (or less) if you buy secondhand on ebay and fit it yourself. Your local 'computer shop' would charge more of course.
