Krita AppImage UI elements are tiny

Fri May 24, 2019 2:11 pm
Hi.
I've had been using Krita for more than two years in Windows.
Recently, I switched to Linux.
I used the Krita version available in my distro's repo for a while but found it to be outdated.
So, I downloaded the Krita AppImage from the website krita.org.
My problem is that Krita doesn't scale with my distro's scale settings, I'm using 1.4 as scale factor, but Krita AppImage doesn't respect that.
The one downloaded from the system repo wasn't showing this issue.
Please help.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the font is "hard-coded" on the appimage, same as the theme/style, thus although it fix many issues with local libraries it has its limitations, I remember a while back seen people using a command to open the appimages and this will allow to follow the system settings, but I also remember that not all appimages would behave the same.

Which distro are you using? if by any chance you using Debian/Ubuntu (or its derivatives), you may want to try the Lime repository, https://launchpad.net/~kritalime/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Anything Debian/Ubuntu tends to keep software versions for longer thus they feel at times "outdated", you may want to try a Linux that is kind of rolling release for newer versions by default. :)

Didn't know that, I use about 5 AppImages and they follow my system scaling, so I thought it could be solved for Krita AppImage.
Some AppImages do follow system scaling and some allow custom scaling.
Is there any plan to implement any such feature in the future?

Yes, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
I've tried that ppa, it worked fine.
Is that a stable build or a nightly one?

Arch Linux?
Give me a few suggestions, if you can.
I'm a novice at Linux, no prior terminal-command knowledge.
Thanks :)

Try to download Krita 4.2.0 beta version appimage, does it work better? There is a new fractional scaling which can be turned on in Configure Krita.

I did enable that, it doesn't work for me. :(
No change in scales.
krita-4.1.7-x86_64.appimage is the one I'm currently using.

Yes, I've tried krita-4.2.0-alpha-x86_64.appimage, couldn't find any fractional scaling there.
I tried krita-4.2.0-beta-7b941de-x86_64.appimage and krita-4.2.0-beta-75df7cc-x86_64.appimage just now and by default there's no change in scaling.
Small fonts and icons.
I can't seem to find any option to turn on fractional scaling.
Can you please let me know where it's available under Configure Krita?
Thanks.

I haven't used fully appimages to this day, I'm afraid I don't know much about how they actually work, at the end I think could be a combination of local software and its interaction with specific appimage. Sorry can't be of much help here.

Boud and Tymond should correct me if I'm wrong, I think is the latest stable version available at the website, I don't think is a alpha/beta.

I'm no expert either even after 13+ years of using Linux! :D I use it for nothing but art and regular computing, no coding/hacking/tech at all. Around a year ago I was looking for a system that was similar to Arch but friendly (for a family member pc) and tried a few, Antergos was the one I thought was the better option as it uses Arch repos, unlike other Arch-like distros, all of them are fine is just that I've been using Arch for so long now that I feel comfortable with it. I prefer rolling release, but I know some people like to keep their system without much change for a least six months, it all depends on how comfortable you feel, at the end, the only thing I don't recommend is to mix old software with new, is always a recipe for problems. :)
