Krita not starting up

Fri Jun 07, 2019 6:58 pm
Hey, this is my first time downloading Krita and every time I try to download the latest version either 4.2.0 or 4.2.1 64-bit for window 10, and try to run the program it won't open. I got the little circle prompt like it is processing the request for 2 seconds, but then it goes away and the program does not open. I've tried rebooting the computer, uninstalling and reinstalling the program, and installing different versions of the program such as the 64-bit version, the 32-bit version, the portable 64-bit version, and the portable 32 bit version. I also checked that my computer was compatible with the program. The last thing I tried was opening up the desktop shortcut file location and the file location for that shortcut to find the executable program file to see if there was simply an issue with the shortcuts, but when I found the executable file's icon it did not have the Krita logo like the previous two files. The icon that the actual source file had was like a piece of paper. I know that in other programs the executable file should have the logo of the program, but that wasn't the case this time I'm not sure if that was deliberate or not because when I look at the uninstall file, that does have the Krita logo. I eventually downloaded an older version (4.1.7 64-bit) and that finally worked. Then I tried to see if having an older version, and upgrading to new version would work, but that did not work either. I was having the same issues opening up the program. I've exhausted my depth of knowledge on troubleshooting for this this issue. I tried to do the crash logger thing, but I'm assuming since the program didn't boot at all, it didn't technically crash? I wanted to report a bug because it is a reproducible problem, but I was directed here. Does anyone know what the issue may be with me downloading the newest versions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To eliminate some potential problems, there are some questions:

Is this your computer and are you using the first created account, the one with admin/install capabilities?

Do you have lots of C: drive space left? How much RAM does your computer have?

Have you recently been able to download and install substantial sized applications like GIMP and Libre Office?
If in doubt, download and install GIMP or Libre Office to make sure that you can (they're both free and useful).

Where did you download krita from and how big was the download?
You say, ".. try to download .." and, "... what the issue may be with me downloading ...".
A successful download and a successful installation are two different things but a bad download can lead to a bad installation experience.
So, where does the problem start?

If 4.1.7 64-bit worked then you have a 64-bit computer.

If you download the krita 4.2.1 64-bit portable version and you Extract it, do the resulting folder contents look 'reasonable and believable'? In that folder, then in the bin folder there should be a krita.exe file that has the standard krita icon. Can you run that?

Yes this is my computer and this is my main and only account with admin capabilities.

I have 15.2GB of memory left on my C: drive and the download file for version 4.2.1 64-bit is 104MB so I should have more than enough space. My computer is a Laptop with 4GB of RAM. According to the sytem info I have 4GB of installed physical memory with 3.80 of Total physical memory. The system requirements on the Krita website says I need 2GB of RAM

I had GIMP downloaded already on my computer and it was working perfectly with no issues. I recently deleted it because I was going to use Krita as my main art platform once I got my new drawing pad in the mail. I also have Blender that was simultaneously installed with GIMP aand I had no issues running them both before I deleted GIMP.

I downloaded Krita From Krita.org and the download size was 104mb. To my knowledge I had a successful download. Once I actually install the program it looks successful as well because I got no error messages from either and everything appears normal like any other program I've downloaded and installed.

I just downloaded and extracted Krita 4.2.1 64-bit version again after opening the bin file, I did find the files to be believable. I even saw the krita logo on the krita.exe file like I did not see in the "windows installer 64-bit (104MB)" version from the website. I did however notice something weird. I right clicked and saw "troubleshoot compatibility" so I clicked that. It went through the process and then clicked on "recommended settings" then it said

"Settings applied to Krita:
-Windows compatibility mode: Windows 8"

I found this weird since I'm currently running Windows 10 and even if I was running windows 8, Krita.org says the recommended operating system is windows 7? I do have an older laptop so I wouldn't be surprised if it was more of an issue of the hardware itself. I'll have to look into that as being a possible issue.

I know for a fact I can use photoshop or whatever and have the means to pay for the subscription, but I like the community of creators for open source programs more. I've literally spent 3 days trying to get the latest version of Krita. I'll get a new computer eventually due to the fact that I need one that is capable of running Unity because this one can't fully run it, but if I could run the latest version of Krita on this one, that would be AMAZING. I honestly appreciate your help so far

When you downloaded and installed GIMP and Blender, your laptop Windows 10 OS was in a particular state, which 'worked'. Since then, it will have had updates (a reasonable assumption) and the computer you have now is not the same as the computer you had then. That is why I asked you to download and install GIMP or Libre Office (or whatever) to see if it still 'worked'. I suggest that you reinstall GIMP, not only to test this but because GIMP has useful facilities (like Text to Path) that krita doesn't have.

It sounds like downloading is working fine.

The Windows installer version won't have a krita logo on it because it's not krita. It's something that contains something that has the potential to become krita after it's gone through the installation process.

It may or may not have been a good idea to set krita.exe into Windows 8 compatibility mode. I'm not sure but I think that from this point on, anything called krita.exe will be run in Windows 8 compatibility mode. This needs someone who knows the details of krita on Windows to comment on. It may be possible to revert that setting, I don't know. After that, did you try running the krita.exe file in the bin folder of the 4.2.1 64-bit portable version? (It works fine on my Windows 10 system and I always use the portable version to avoid the complications of 'installing'.)

Oh ok! I see what you mean. I just downloaded and installed GIMP again and it it worked without any issue.

I didn't set the compatibility mode it did it on it own when I clicked "Troubleshoot compatibility" to see what it did.

I ended up messing with the troubleshoot setting and was able to set it to different versions of Windows and after running through it a few times I got results saying that it was incompatible. I'm sure I'll be able to use it after I upgrade my computer, but for now it seems I'm kind of out of luck. I appreciate your help through this process.
