A bit more negative progress to report: I installed Windows Virtual PC on my W7 desktop with W7 as OS and installed Krita 4.2.1 with exactly the same outcome, i.e. it doesn't run.
The Windows error report identifies Qt5Core.dll as the offending module. Thanks for checking that. I'll try to do the same thing, only on a win10 desktop, since my win7 test system has died a horrible death last summer.

Okay, I've been able to create a Windows 7 VM and I can reproduce the issue now, so we're getting somewhere. I still would like to know what's happening on Windows 10 systems where Krita wont' start...

So... Qt 5.12 really, really, really needs OpenGL v2 or better to run any application. See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/277 ... celeration . I'm looking into whether we can just ship the software implementation Qt ships with Qt Creator.

No, that doesn't work: I still got crashes in Qt's GLSL shaders, so I cannot just reuse the software implementation from QtCreator in Krita.
Installing the experimental direct3D support in my VM did make it possible for Krita to start. When running on real hardware, updating/installing the drivers for your GPU "should" also install a workable OpenGL version (i.e. 2.0 or higher). I wonder whether we could detect a total lack of opengl before letting Qt do its thing so we can warn the user... |

When I attempt to update the driver Windows returns message latest driver is already installed!

Which GPU do you have exactly? And which driver package are you installing?

The graphics adapter is Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation- WDDM-1.1) when attempting to update driver OS returns message best driver already installed.

How are you trying to update the driver? Did you download the latest driver for your gpu from intel's website?
|

|
No, using the update driver button on the driver properties tab on Win 10.

Ah, that explains it. That button updates the generic drivers to the latest version for your version of Windows, but those generic drivers are really limited, and they mostly don't get updated. If you've got an Intel display chip, you should go to the intel website and download the driver for the version of the chipset you've got.

Just been to Intel website, used there scanner as the information for the chipset stated product discontinued, scanner returned message "No updates available".

Now have my W10 back. Here is the output from DebugViewe when trying to run K 4.2.1:
00000001 0.00000000 [11724] Requested non-existent id 0 from selector SERVCONFIG. 00000002 0.00520860 [11724] Requested non-existent id 0 from selector SERVCONFIG. 00000003 21.28734779 [3876] QWindowsEGLContext: Failed to create context, eglError: 3005, this: 0x28bdf80 The first two lines are written when I right-click the Krita desktop icon (so as to run as administrator) so perhaps not relevant. Then just the third line is written on run. Regards Keith Jeram |

That looks seriously messed up, to be honest. Do you maybe reinstall the Windows that comes with your hardware with a generic windows installer downloaded from Microsoft?
