Input Lag

Sat Jun 29, 2019 2:18 am
Hi! So I think this topic has been brushed on before but out of the posts I've found on it, I haven't found anything that works.

I'm a Windows 10 user, recently had to do a full wipe and OS-reinstall of my desktop. Prior to that I had been using Krita with no problems, but after I did the wipe and reinstalled Krita, latest version, (as well as my graphics tablet drivers) I noticed I started getting an input lag. Often times when I press a brush down, it won't register the first few millimeters and will "jump ahead."

I also noticed it does this when I try to pan the navigator, or zoom in/out on the navigator, selecting a color on the color wheel, trying to scroll thru menus, etc. etc.

I only have this problem with my graphics tablet (wacom intuos pro). Mouse, it works normally. Other painting programs, it isn't an issue at all with either tablet or mouse.

I have disabled "hold to right click", tried disabling windows ink (only to break functionality), fiddled around with all the settings on my wacom pen, been through that whole thing, and while it kind of helped, definitely did not get rid of the problem. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the wacom driver, tried downgrading to an older driver, as well as stopping/starting/restarting the wacom driver service. Those didn't do anything.

Interestingly enough, I actually tried to record the phenomenon happening using OBS Studio, but when I played the video back, it didn't seem to capture the cursor movement even though I had seen it in real time. So, I recorded another video of it with my phone to show what my eyes are seeing vs. the computer (I suppose this means it's an issue with my tablet?)

(Not sure what the policy is on links to outside places, not sure how else to add video lols)

So, what I'm seeing:

What OBS Studio captured:

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Something similar has happened to my Windows 10 installation, not quite the same as your situation in that it affects all graphics applications when using the stylus. I belive it's a Windows update thing since I now can't access my Wacom tablet control utility.

The delay is a screen distance delay, which probably corresponds to a tablet distance effect, and by using the tablet tester in krita I can see that the response to the stylus is messed up.
When I touch the stylus to the tablet, the touch is not registered until I lift the stylus, then it registers a mouse press followed by a release.
If I touch the stylus to the tablet then move it slowly, it waits until the stylus has moved a short distance then registers a mouse press followed by many moves.

For krita, I partially solved the problem in Settings -> Configure Krita -> Tablet Settings by changing it from Wintab to Windows 8, OK then restart krita. That fixed it for painting on the canvas but not for touch-dragging off-canvas controls. Tap works fine, it's touch-drag that shows the problem.

You could try that to see if it helps in your situation.

Ah gotcha.

Mine already happened to be on Windows 8+. Switching between the two didn't seem to make a difference. My input tester is working perfectly, oddly enough.

(I have no idea why OBS Studio doesn't capture my cursor moving in between strokes, it looks so trippy in video! But response time in the tester is perfect despite how odd it looks in the GIF.)

Does it work if you open Wacom settings and disable/minimize "double click distance"?

Hm... Well my initial problem with the brush itself lagging upon first contact seemed to get a fair bit better either by more fiddling I might've done in the past months or some other unforeseen changes, so it's harder for me to tell a difference now than I would've been able to when I first posted this, but I think so, yeah. That would solve my brush lag problem, but I don't particularly love working in canvas only mode (can't use the navigator, color wheel, layers, other tools, etc.) Plus, not sure if the issues with the navigator, zoom and color wheel are alleviated as I can't use them lol. Does it working in canvas only mode mean something?
