Every time I've been using krita for just over 1 year my macbook(2015) always begins to heat up after 2-3 minutes of use. I have never used it for any complex drawing - mainly line art. File size i normally choose is A4 300dpi. Currently i have 4.1.7 installed on my mac 10.14.3. This has always been an ongoing issue even after I download the latest krita available so any help with this could be great as each time i use krita I worry about how hot my mac gets and how much work the fans do on my device. I do not have this issue for any other design software I use and this also still occurs when I switch off all other programs. Tested it right now and cpu went up to 53% in a 1-2 minutes whilst scribbling on a 150dpi file. My mac is placed on a lap stand and is cleaned quite well so there should be no issues with the device/fan itself

mac specs are as followed:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,4
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB

thanks!

Is this is a system with a dual GPU? If so, try the latest nightly build, which should run Krita on the Intel GPU instead of the AMD GPU: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krit ... cOS_Build/

My 2015 macbook pro only has an Intel GPU and doesn't get really hot, though the fans turn on. But that also happens when I'm using it for coding.

Hi,
no, my mac only has one GPU. Would you still recommend downloading the Krita_Nightly_MacOS_Build ? I ran an etrecheck on my laptop and everything seems fine in the report. if you have any suggestions for this it would be much appreciated as I have been finding it very difficult to use krita for the past year due to my macbook over heating [like crazy!!] - and this occurred even when it was completely brand new. I made a post on the apple forums as well which you can find here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250454330?page=1 - the post also includes my etrecheck report as well as screenshots of my activity monitor/CPU if that helps? My mac fan does go on when I code on apps like jupyter and it does go warm but it's nothing I worry about? The amount of heat that builds up when I use Krita though is really worrying and makes me stop my work/lineart after 5 minutes or so.

essentially a timelapse for how quickly the cpu went up after installing krita 4.2.2: https://kus0.tumblr.com/post/185984910368

Thank you!

Hi!

Is it normal for your macbook to even spin the fans loudly?? I never get heat or fan speedup problems if krita is used lifting the pen from stroke to stroke with other not so heavy processes at the same time (music, websites). But if a webpage script gets crazy, or another heavy process is running (Darktable exporting photos) I do get fan rockets. This is because krita uses all your CPU power to create the brush strokes. And with other processes using the CPU it almost never goes idle and starts to build heat. You can limit the number of CPU threads krita is allowed to use: in Settings on the performance section, there is a slider to reduce or increase the number of cores tu use, this will reduce the amount of CPU krita uses and probably reduce the times it makes the fans go wild. This however will make mediant to big brushes go slower.

I would not worry to much if it gets loud, a lot of programs can make the macbook fire up the fans, and as macOS tries to avoid any noise it delays fan activation until the computer is really hot. This can happen on any process that uses a lot of CPU, I specially get it with Davinci resolve when exporting, or scrubbing the color corrected timeline with effects, on Darktable when applying multiple noise reduction passes, when sudently I forgot I was compiling krita and start compiling another krita :p. As a quick test: I made Krita strokes during 10 minutes at 400% doing gauss brush strokes on a Layer with a slow filter mask. Yes the mac gets loud and hot, but the fans did not get even to half speed (I suspect this is macOs trying to keep the sound low). Trying the same but setting the fans to almost max speed (Mac Fans control -> manual) makes the mac get super loud but no heat is ever felt.

On the timelapse images provided I see kernel_task and WindowServer are quite busy. on my system when ther are idle they never go above 6% and using krita they stay below 26%. On your system are quite different, but the 60% and 50% could be normal on your computer.

HI ghevan, thanks for your response!
I have reduced the number of CPU threads and it definitely does help!! My mac fan only goes loud when the laptop goes super hot!! Thanks for your help!! I'm not too sure about how high the kernal_task usually is but yes it normally does go pretty high when I am using krita, and then it goes back down when I stop using krita :D

thanks once again!
