Krita not launching?

Thu Aug 08, 2019 1:31 am
Hi! I've been having this consistent issue across now 2 PCs and it really, really bugs me because there seems to be no solution.

I am running Windows 10 64 bit.
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700
GPU: AMD Vega 56
RAM: 16gb 2400mhz
I have 2 SSDs and a HDD and I've tried installing Krita on each drive to solve my issue to no avail.

I was using the free download version of Krita on my old PC for a bit until it decided to randomly stop launching. It would launch but only use around ~20mb of RAM and not actually load up, even if left unattended to for awhile. This bug persisted through uninstalls + reinstalls, cache clearing, and PC restarts, but would randomly fix itself with no reasoning behind it. This happened multiple times and I couldn't seem to find a specific fix -- and on one occasion, resorted to factory resetting my PC to fix this issue.

Now I have a different PC and own the Steam release of Krita. I have been using it to draw without hassle for awhile but tonight it seems this issue has returned. Krita refuses to launch and will use up 20mb of ram. There's no Krita icon in the task manager, just the default application icon. This happens even if I launch it through steam itself or run the exe directly. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it multiple times and cleared the user files/configuration as well without much success. Windows does not seem to detect the installation as trying to launch it through the start menu brings me the option to install through the Windows store versus the already installed program (which it was fine doing previously). Steam's shortcut for it seems to also be horribly broken and launching through Steam now just doesn't open the file. The filepath for the shortcut is:

"%COMSPEC% /C start "" "%CD%\bin\krita.exe" " which doesn't seem to do much good.

I've restarted my PC multiple times to try to fix it now. Any solutions or ideas?

Do you have any kind of third party anti-virus or other 'security' software running on your PC? If so, disable it and try downloading the Windows portable 64 bit .zip package and run that to see if it works for you. Try the portable .zip package even if you don't have any antivirus software running.

* Also try to reset Krita's settings (https://docs.krita.org/en/KritaFAQ.html ... figuration)

* Check the crash log: https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... ml#dr-minw

* "Windows does not seem to detect the installation as trying to launch it through the start menu brings me the option to install through the Windows store versus the already installed program (which it was fine doing previously)." -- that's weird. You're not using Windows S, are you? If not, then I am really beginning to dislike Microsoft's pushiness...

Re: Krita not launching?

Wed Jul 21, 2021 5:57 am
Currently running Kubuntu 21.04, when this started, I was running a dual boot Windows 10/ Kubuntu 2010 LTE

Krita crashed in the middle of working on a page. My project files can get to between 600MB and 1.5 GB on average. Sometimes Krita will freeze up or crash when I'm opening, closing, or saving a file. Not the end of the world.

Sunday Krita crashes, and when I go to restart her, she crashes again. A third time I try, Krita crashes again before getting past the loading screen. I try to send an error report. The error report fails on the final step. A second time, and third time, a fourth time.

And this point, I purge Krita and all it's supporting packages and then reinstall. 3, 4, 5 times. Results do not change.

At this point, I decide to just copy all my files to an external hard drive, wipe my computer and reinstall Kubuntu. I even notice the LTE expired in July, so I upgrade to the 2021 model. I get about 12 hours worth of work done before it starts happening again.

I've tried doing the ctrl+shft+alt while Krita boots up. No results.

I have deadlines. I've been using Krita for years and never had this issue. I wanna set something on fire. Help please.

--------------------------------------
Original Error Report

Application: krita (4.2.9)

Qt Version: 5.12.8
Frameworks Version: 5.68.0
Operating System: Linux 5.4.0-77-generic x86_64
Windowing system: X11
Distribution: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS

-- Information about the crash:
- What I was doing when the application crashed:

saving a file. the file has lots of layers. i merge what i can, but 20-30 layers per file is average. the files can get a little bulky (600MB to 1GB on average) sometimes the system will freeze up for like 3 second when opening Krita or an any files inside Krita. I keep at least 200GB of free space on my drive, 8GB RAM. Should be enough to works with, sometimes Krita crashes. Nothing too crazy.

What's different about this time, is when I went to restart Krita, it crashed instantly when I restarted it, and now crashes instantly every time i try to open it. Halp!

The crash can be reproduced every time.

You are using a very old version of Krita. Use the latest appimage instead.

You can download the appimage from here: https://krita.org/en/download/krita-desktop/ (You need to give it execution permissions before you can run it.)
