How to paste without killing clone layers?

Krita 4.2.6 beta1
Linux

From searching around it seems like there is no way to paste INTO a layer, Krita always creates a new layer and you have to merge down. Is that still correct?

The problem I have is I need to paste into a layer that is the source for multple clone layers, and as soon as I merge down the clones die. Well, they get automatically converted to regular paint layers; you can see their icons change in the layers dock and they don't get the newly pasted stuff. It goes without saying, I need them to remain clone layers...

At this point I can't even come up with a workaround. Anyone have any ideas? Thx!

You can make a group and then clone the group. If you put an extra layer in the group by adding one or pasting content, the clone will clone it and it will stay as a live clone even if you then merge down layers inside the group.

Interesting.... Not ideal because of the layer setup and workflow changes involved, but it is a workaround.

I wonder if the copy/paste into layer or a less destructive merge-down is something on the roadmap to be improved someday. Another one I keep hitting is that the merge down process also wipes the layer blend mode and opacity, and again I'm just trying to paste (result is always normal, 100%). The general effect is that copy/paste is too dangerous to use.

Anyway, thx for the info.
