Hard Palette Knife

Tue Nov 12, 2019 6:38 pm
I'm sure I am just missing what the brush setting is but how do I make a hard palette knife without any "Gaussian blurring"?
The Rake Blender seems to do it but there is all this blurring between the tines or black areas on the png brush tip image.
What I want is Black moves the color as far as I keep moving the tip, gray not so far transparent not at all but no blur just hard color moving, like real life.
I've seen the Asparagus vids but he fakes Bob's knife using Patterns.
I have 2 IPad apps that do this but would like to stay in Krita of course.
Any help will be appreciated,
Richard

Hmm, I think I understand your point, but the problem as far as I know is that Krita's Color Smudge engine uses the brush tip as a transparency mask for the image information it picks up from the canvas. You can more easily see how it copies and translates the image content with every brush dab event when you increase the Spacing value a lot, so dabs happen less frequently. Only fully black pixels on the brush tip retain 100% opacity so that no blending happens. There is no inherent blurring like you describe, but the repeated blending of lower opacity pixels averages the color values, resulting in a similar effect.

Could you show a screenshot or even better a video demonstrating the look of the brush you want from those other apps? What you describe seems like it would require per-pixel displacement.

I hope this url works all I can do is post it to facetome and hope. Preview is not showing the image... (Why can't I just drop an image in?)
The canvas texture was added later.
This is what I am looking for and can do in some IPad apps. The knife even drags the paper white into the colors. the color "breaks"like a real knife'''

ps
I have been changing the brush engine but I think I am just fooling myself. And I have made tips that are pure black to cut down on partial mixing.
If I were to knife this image again it would just move the pixels around still without any blurring.

Yeah, it's probably not currently possible to recreate that exact brush behavior, but I tried making something a bit different that may work well enough.
Here's the brush settings file, the used tip and a screenshot https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rwizat3konnr ... aBEla?dl=0
It gets messier with higher pressure as well as speed of the stroke. Tweak to your liking.
Edit: I refined the settings a bit, and it also now uses an animated GIH brush tip by default that switches between 2 tips depending on pressure input, instead of the single PNG.
