Problem, How do I transform a layer w/o transforming mask?

Hi, I have a layer of hair, I'm trying to warp it to better fit the layer mask I've made.
While I warp the layer, it also warps the layer mask, but when I hit enter, the desired result happens... however, I can't get a good fit because I can't see the accurate mask while I'm doing it.

In other words, while warping the layer, the mask warps too. When I hit enter, the layer remains warped (good) and the alpha returns to it's non warped state. Is there any way to warp the layer and have the alpha stay the same? Or another way of going about this all together?

If I warp a paint layer with a transparency mask on it, they both warp and the mask stays warped when I press Enter. So I'm wondering what you're doing to have the mask return to its non-warped state.

Apart from that, you could make a copy of the mask, convert it to a paint layer and have that at about 25% opacity over your hair layer. Then you'll be able to see the outline of the unwarped mask as you manipulate the hair

Huh, that's funny, you are right. I don't know what I saw about the mask coming back to place, but huge respect considering that part. I do remember I did something like that, it might have been while inheriting alpha (testing it)

Yes, that must've been what it was, I must've had a layer mask on, and a duplicate image below that. I've been very tired the last couple days, must be winter.

I actually ended up doing what you said about using an inverted paint border above. It works well. and is a good simulation of what we are trying to do. I do wish there was a way to edit inside the mask. I'll keep trying things. Thank you ahabgreybeard.

I usually rotate and scale masks using Free Transform, but with vector layers, the edit menu only offers "Free Transform path," even when I have un-linked the layer mask and selected it alone. In fact, even when I alt-click into the layer mask itself, I can't Free Transform Activate MyPrepaidCenter

With 4.2.8, I can transform the painted content of a transparency mask and a filter mask if they're on a vector layer.
What do you mean by 'un-link the layer mask'?

A transform mask is a different thing of course.
