I'm really enjoying making animations in Krita. I saved the file and reopened it just fine. Then did more work on it and it looks and plays just fine before saving but now Krita just crashes without any warning when I try to re open it. I've saved the working animation and every time I try to add to it I have the same issue. Below is what my event viewer is telling me on my Windows 10 system.

Which version of krita are you using?
What happens if you do Save As on the working file without making any changes to it?
Does the working file Render out correctly to video?
When you make changes, are the changes all about animation - e.g more frames, editing of frame content?
What happens if you add a non-animated paint layer and then Save?

Would you be able to provide a download link for the working file and a file that crashes?

Krita 4.2.8

I've opened a working file and just saved it under the original name. When I try to reopen it Krita just shuts down unceremoniously. It's pretty consistent. I add another layer then add about 10 to 15 frames with scribbles on it then it won't reopen after saving.

The working file renders fine as a gif or mp4

I save it as another name it still opens and renders fine.

I tend to save the animation then exit the window. Maybe I should get into the habit of selecting file -> quit or ctrl +q ?

Tried to save it and only close the window through the Krita menu. The file got corrupted again.

The 'broken' one does give me an instant crash with version 4.2.8 on Windows 10 (and with a Linux appimage).

I opened the working one with version 4.2.8 in Windows 10 and added a layer with some scribbled animated frames then saved it under a different name. That saved file opens fine for me.

Can you open that one? Do the changes I've made correspond to the type of changes that you made but which went bad for you?
If it works for you, is it usable for your further development, editing and saving? Can you make further changes to it with no problems?

If it doesn't work for you then that seems to imply something 'wrong' with your PC and installation.
If it does work for you then that's just strange.

The types of changes I made were to the sun layer. And your modifications opened fine on my computer. I've just started using Krita and this is my first multi-layer project.

I'd suggest that you do some quick but serious prodding, poking and editing of the file I sent you to make sure that your edits can be saved and reopened.
What happened to you is very rare but something similar has happened before (not on an animation) and I've 'repaired' it by editing and saving the .kra on my computer. All I can think of is that it must be some kind of magical mystery event.

Well, Krita should never ever crash no matter how corrupt the file is, so please @jpeacock make a bug report (Importance: crash) and attach the faulty file.

Bug file submitted: 415406. It appears to be similar to bug report 327571. I unzipped the .kra file and deleted all the extra layers and zipped it back but that didn't fix the issue either.

I have the same problem. I work on a particular file with animation for a day or two and then when I try to open the file the following day, Krita just crashes. This has happened twice now. I can open other older files with animation but this file keeps crashing. I saved a backup base file as a PSD but that obviously loses all animation. I have to re-open the PSD and start from scratch which is a colossal waste of time.

The file has 4 groups, 3 of them have two layers and the final one has 7 layers. I hid the final group in hope of saving processing power and avoiding a crash. There are no blending modes or layer styles enabled. I've only managed to animate on two layers of about 600-700 frames before the issue cropped up again.

I can't confirm whether or not it is the number of frames or groups, all I know is that I saved the file, closed Krita without any crashes and the next day the file is corrupt. I've tried opening it in an older version, saving the file to .zip and repairing it, opening it with the portable version, adjusting the memory allocation, adjusting the OpenGL configurations, opening it from within Krita, drag and drop, recent files, even opening an auto-save - no difference.

This problem in 4.2.8 is caused by onion skins being turned on when you save the animation.

You can open the 'broken' .kra file in 4.2.7.1, turn off the onion skins and re-Save, after which it will open in 4.2.8 with no problem, until you save it again with onion skins turned on.

This has been tracked down in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=415406

As far as I can tell from a bit of testing, it's been fixed now in Krita Plus for the Linux and Windows packages.

For Linux, the appimage is here: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krit ... age_Build/ but the KDE binary factory still has problems with appimage downloads and you have to let it download into a document tab, wait about 10-15 minutes until it's finished downloading, then save the 'document'.
I suggest that you don't use any other application while this is going on because it seems to be a fragile process and I've broken it before by playing local music files while I was waiting.

Anyone who might be interested in a fix for themselves. I downloaded the portable version 4.2.7.1 and followed the process kindly recommended by ahabgreybeard.

1. Open in 4.2.7.1,
2. Turn off onion skinning,
3. Save
4. Then open in 4.2.8 and voila, it works again!

Yes but .... the 'recommended' process is to download and use Krita Plus, which is an early release of the next version of krita
