Color picker throws a "Cannot write to palette file" message every time I try to use it. I have noticed that the "show percentages" box changes as I touch different areas, so I think the pen is sensing the colors. I've tried remedies found from searching this forum, without success. The Krita sub-directory for color shows the right files. I don't know how to evaluate them, but I did switch palette files with no change in behavior. Also tested on blank canvas and previous images. No luck. Other functions in Krita are working normally.
The picker had been working properly a day ago. Any other info. I can send to help troubleshoot.? Am I looking at a reinstall? Greg |

The only "Cannot write to palette file" message that I know about says more than that and explains that you may be trying to write to one of krita's standard pre-loaded palettes, which are read-only. Is that the message you see? If not, please explain further and give the exact location of the folder that you're looking in and what you expect to find there.
The Krita sub-directory for color contains user added colour profiles, not palettes. User created/added palettes, which are writable, are stored in the krita/palettes folder in the user resources krita folder. The Tool Options docker for the colour picker has an Add to Palette option box and I assume that is ticked. Which palette have you selected in the drop down selector next to that? |

I'm still in the same dilemma. Any attempt to use Color Picker in the situation shown in the image, fails. I would like to know how to create a user-built palette in reference to the sentence you wrote: "User created/added palettes, which are writable, are stored in the krita/palettes folder in the user resources krita folder." I have been unable to locate the path to that folder so I can examine it when trying to create a usable new palette. Most important to me would be your instructions on how to create a new palette that can be written to and not lock up the Color Picker. Thank you for continuing to help this novice user! Greg Schultz p.s. I'm new to posting images here. There is a useful screenshot at the tinyurl address. I'm not sure I formatted it properly. |

Create a new palette using a Palette docker (first show all palettes using the leftmost button, then click on the plus button), then switch to this palette in Tool Options in the Color Picker.

Ah, I thought you'd already created your own palette and were having problems putting colours into it and then went looking trying to find it.
In the krita windows/dockers/GUI, it has all that you need to create new tools and resources and import them. It's not a good idea to go looking in the various folders unless you want an 'interesting learning experience'. By all means do that if you want to but please make a backup copy of the entire krita folder before you make any changes at all. P.S. You forgot to put a slash before the final 'img'. You can edit your post to correct that and do Preview to make sure it works. Edit: P.P.S. the location shown in that message is not where your personal resources are stored. That is where the krita default resources are stored. Your personal resources are in C:/Users/{yourname}/AppData/Roaming/krita |

I've created a new empty palette, and it shows in the Roaming/Krita directory. That's progress!
However, it is still the case that any attempt to use the Color Picker gives the message that it can't write to C:/Program files/Krita(x64)/share/krita/palettes/concept-cookie.gpl I now understand that the files in that directory (x64) are protected. How can I make the Color Picker de-select the concept-cookie palette (the default?) and go to my "Roaming/Krita--etc. directory when I select my new palette file in the drop down palette list ? (Just had a thought, can I use Color Picker to populate my new personal palette? Are all palette files read-only, even ones from the user?) Sorry this is dragging on. I'd like to be back to painting ![]() Greg |

The important thing is that your new palette shows up in the Palettes docker if you select it in the drop down icon/list thing at the bottom of the docker.
The reason you have that message is because you have the concept-cookie palette selected as the target for the Color Selector Tool (colour picker). The Tool Options docker shows you all the various options for the currently selected tool. Look to the right of the Add To Palette check box in the Tool Options docker. You will see it says 'Concept-cookie'. You need to select a different one by clicking there and selecting your recently created palette. |
