Taper lines without pressurized pen

Tue Jun 02, 2020 2:16 pm
Hey I have a touchscreen laptop and a non pressurized stylus is there a way I can make my lines taper off in the beginning and end like a crescent shape?

If you don't have pressure variation (or even if you do), a way to paint a consistent tapered start and end to the stroke is to give the final stroke two start points and thus use two separate strokes that begin at the ends of the final stroke and meet in the middle.

For this, you'll need a very steady hand or you can use painting assistants.

You can get a good taper at the start of a stroke by using the Size controlled by Distance as shown here:

The length and shape of the taper are adjustable by the Length value and the shape of the transfer curve.
I used the Basic-1 brush preset but you can use any painting brush preset provided you disable any other size controls on it.

You start the first stroke at one end of the desired final stroke and end it in the middle. Then you start the second stroke at the other end and meet the first one in the middle. You need Snap to assistants enabled in the Tool Options docker.
Here, I've gone a bit wild with many assistants but it all works out.:

[Edited to provide the correct link.]

The concentric ellipse and the vanishing point are tricky because the assistant path is variable and you have to be careful to line up the second stroke assistant path with the start of the first stroke. You can see where I didn't do that properly and there is a 'step' in some lines.
The ellipse and the spline are fixed and much easier to use.

Thank you for being very descriptive it helped me got something! Im still figuring out what these settings do to program the pen. but i found if you choose the mountain graph it makes it fade in & out after a set distance. tho i wish there was a way to make it do that at the beginning and end if the stroke no matter what so I could use it for sketching and lineart
