Grid Question

Mon Oct 12, 2020 1:28 pm
I'm pretty new to Krita, having cut the cord to Adobe products a few weeks ago.

I'm having issues with the grid. I have set my 6.75" x 5.25" document at 300 ppi, so when setting the spacing for the grid I expected that 100 pixels would equal an inch. That's not what's happening, however. I have to set the spacing at either 37 pixels or 38 pixels to come close to an inch on the rulers and neither is exactly an inch. (I think that 37.5 pixels would hit the inch mark perfectly, but that's not an option.)

So what is going on here? What am I missing?

Thanks,
Mary.

There is a button on the bottom bar of Krita that will switch between two modes of showing the image - either showing 100% as the size when pixels from the image match pixels on the screen, or showing 100% as the "real size" - but even in that case you need a system that accurately informs Krita of what is the actual dpi of the monitor (I believe Windows always say 96 dpi?). (The button is just next to the zoom slider).

So if you want to have a grid inch by inch, it's best if you just calculate it in pixels. However I don't understand why you believe it should be 100 pixels? From my calculations, if the ppi is 300, then it means it's 300 pixels per inch, which means you want to put grid line every 300 pixels? (In which case you should get 6 lines in one dimension and 5 lines in the other dimension). Is that correct?

Also you can use View -> Show Rulers and then right-click on them and switch to Inches to see that yes, in fact, 300 pixels = 1inch, according to Krita.

You're right - I should have said 300 pixels per inch, not 100.

I took screen shots of the issue but I can't figure out how to add them to my post.

When I have the X and Y spacing at 300 px and subdivisions at 8, I see only a number of subdivision lines (light blue) at the 1 inch marks and no main lines (dark blue).

When I have the X and Y spacing at 37px and subdivs at 8, I see the main lines at near the 1 inch marks (but not on it, which throws all the inches off the further away from 0, 0) and the 8 subdivisions as expected even spaced between them.

This happens whether I no matter how the "aspect display" button is toggled.

I can't find any setting to tell Krita the 'pixel per inch' setting of the secondary Acer monitor I'm using with my Mac laptop.

Thanks,
Mary.

Just change the subdivisions to 1 and you'll see it, I think there is a bug, so instead of painting the lines: [0] - 0.25 - 0.5 - 0.75 - [1] grid (in case of 1inch and subdivisions 4) it draws lines [0] - 1 - 2 - 3 - [4].
