Krita Lagging/Clear Undo History

Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:56 pm
I noticed that the brush lagged a lot and when I tried to make a layer invisible it would take about ten seconds for it to work. I noticed that the bottom had a loading bar that said "Updating" and next to it had a warning sign. When I hovered over it, it said "WARNING: Out of memory." I did a bit of research and apparently, it's "swapping." Someone suggested to up the memory limit, which I did. They also said to lower the amount of space spent on undo history, which I guess meant to clear undo history. However, I couldn't find how to clear my undo history.

The number of undo steps is defined in the first page of the settings dialog, not sure right now which tab, but you should be able to find it on your own.

@halla yea I see it now but I tried lowering it and restarting the application and it still had the warning sign. Same thing happened when I increased it. Is there another way to solve "out of memory" other than increasing the memory limit and changing the undo stack size?

Which version (number) of krita are you using and which operating system?
How much RAM does your computer have?

How much RAM does the krita RAM meter show when you start krita and open the .kra file you were working on?

If you increase the amount of RAM in the performance settings, you have to leave at least 1.5 GB for Windows to use (assuming you're using Windows 10).
Also, don't run any other applications at all when you're using krita
A good way to deal with 'out of memory' problems is to fit more RAM in your computer but that may be difficult or expensive depending on your situation.

@ahabgreybeard I'm using Krita 4.4.1 and macOS Big Sur 11.2.1.
It said in memory that I have "16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X" but in storage it said I had 144.23 GB available.

I'm not that sure what you mean by RAM meter but the warning sign said that I had 48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB left. When I press the undo button once the undo data goes from 0 B to 192.0 KiB. It also said the image was 152.5 GiB even though it wasn't a big image. I didn't have a problem with the memory limit until recently.

I already increased the amount of RAM to 100%, which is 16,384 MiB available.
I closed every application but it still had the same problem.
I still have plenty of storage left so I don't think I need more RAM. All of my applications work fine except for Krita.

(I was assuming that you had a Windows 10 laptop with 4GB of RAM or something like that.)
It seems that your Mac has 16GB of RAM and that 144GB figure sounds like the amount of free space available on your hard drive. Was this reported by your Mac system utilities?

The RAM meter is on the krita status bar and it shows the size of the image you're working on and the amount of RAM that it's using. Also, it's colour coded to indicate if RAM use is starting to get high or very high. When you hover over it, you get more detailed information about how much of what kind of data is in RAM.

julie wrote: the warning sign said that I had 48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB left.

Are those the exact words that were used: 48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB left?
That '48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB' looks like the format of the figure for Memory used that you get when you hover on the RAM meter.

That figure of 192.0 KiB variation after Undo is a tiny amount of RAM and not something to be concerned about.

That is very strange

Can you provide a full screen screenshot (.png) of this while it's happening?
Also, if you can arrange it, a screenshot showing the details when you hover over the RAM meter?
What is the size of your .kra file on the hard drive?
Does this happen with any other .kra files for projects of a comparable size and complexity?

I found my RAM and storage space on "About This Mac."

I hovered over the status bar and all the words were white, but the warning sign was yellow.

About the "48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB left," it actually said "Memory used: 48.3 MiB / 16.0 GiB," sorry about that.

Here is the screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/9iVUuPq
My file is 5.6 MB.
This is my first Krita project, so I'm not sure if the same thing happened to past projects.

This is totally strange. Everything looks reasonable apart from the 152.5GB image size.

Can you post a link to your .kra file using a file sharing service or website?

I thought you were using krita back in December 2020? Didn't you Save any artwork then?

If you create a new project and make a few layer in it and do simple scribbling in them, does it Save ok and reopen with no strange RAM usage problems?

I wasn't that active on Krita so I only made one project, but I just made a new project and scribbled a bit and it seemed to work just fine and had no warning sign.

Thank you for rose.kra. There is a very peculiar problem with the layer 'hair highlights 2'.
It seems to have lots of off-canvas content (but I think it's more complicated that that).
If you do Image -> Trim to Image Size, that will fix the problem. At least it did for me.

After the Trim operation, do Save and Quit then carry on working with it.
If you have a problem trimming it, I can post a trimmed version.

I've no idea how this happened and the characteristics are very strange.
If any developer is reading this then I suggest that you have a close look at that layer.

Hi ahabgreybeard

I just wanted to thank you very much for helping Julie with this issue - you have also helped me! Like Julie, I am also using a Mac.

I've been using Krita for a little over a year now (training to be a professional illustrator), never had this problem myself, but it suddently happened this morning while I'm well into my very first paid job! Oh God! I don't deny I was panicking a little inside. But your advice on trimming the image seems to have sorted it. I also increased the Performance RAM levels in Configure Krita.

If any developers read this, one thing I noticed was that one of the last things I did before the problem arose was to use the transform tool to adjust the perspective of a layer. The edges of the transform frame went way outside the edges of the image canvas, far out into the grey. The very last thing I was doing before the problem hit was using the t)_Shapes_Fill brush.
Also, I made a copy of the .kra file before trimming the image. Before trimming the file size was 137.6mb. After trimming it was 118.7mb.

Thanks again ahabgreybeard.
