The onion skins do work but you need to make sure that your animation has certain characteristics.

1. The animation must be done on a transparent layer, not the solid white standard 'background' layer.
2. The onion skins must be enabled, as controlled by the Onion Skins docker. For a default installation, two previous and two next onion skins are enabled so if you haven't been making changes in the Onion Skins docker then that should be ok.
3. The lightbulb icon for the animated layer, in the Timeline, must be turned on to see the onion skins. If you don't have a lightbulb icon on the Timeline then the layer is not an animated layer.

The manual has useful and well illustated advice:

https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_man ... kin-docker

https://docs.krita.org/en/user_manual/a ... with-krita

If you still have problems, post a link to a full screen screenshot (.png) of the entire window, with the Timeline and the Layers docker visible.
