For the past few weeks, when I use the "Freehand Selection" tool, (or other selection tools), the area selected is the inverse of what I select. The workaround of choosing "Invert Selection" in the Select menu works fine, but of course I would like to return the selecting to normal behavior. Does anyone have a suggestion for what is creating this behavior, it must be something simple?

In the Tool Options docker, make sure that the Action is set to Replace.
Having it set to Subtract would explain what you see happening.
