We released the 2.x series, but they are not packaged in official repositaries because they were not very stable or "user ready".
They were aimed for testers. The best advice is to compile Krita yourself from trunk.

Here is step-by-step instruction thread for artists

Here it is more technical

It is doable :) Don't be scared ;)

Distributions sometimes package Krita in testing repositaries, e.g. Fedora does at http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/ repositary.

I'm pretty sure that 2.1 is actually available pre-packaged in Kubuntu 9.10 by installing krita-kde4. There's a chance you may need to add the kubuntu updates ppa.

You can do this just by going into kpackagekit, selecting the bottom icon on the left, choosing the tab marked "Third party software" and adding the line "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/beta/ubuntu karmic main" (no quotes). Close. Let it update when it asks. You should then be able to see krita-kde4 when you search.

This will likely also update a bunch of KDE / Kubuntu related stuff.
