So I was wondering what mods to your tablet and pens you have that improve your experience.

The simple ones I use myself on my wacom graphire 2.

The first is paper over the plastic surface it is real improvement in tactile feedback.
Second is a gel type pencil grip around my pen tip (put on so it extends a couple of mm beyond the tip) that gives even more tactile feedback by grabbing the drawing surface more like chalk or pastels.

I also use the piece of paper trick -- I was a bit worried that it would be bad for the point of the stylus, but then, the tablet came with spares. I really like the feel of the newer intuos pens, so those were fine. But the Krita project Intuos is now with Sven, so I have to make do with my old graphire -- and that's not as much fun. Apparently the difference in resolution really makes a difference when painting. No mods to my old graphire except for a liberal helping of duct tape to make it hang together :-).
