I own a Hewlett Packard lap top with a 250 GB hard drive running Windows XP pro. A while back I made the thing a dual booter by installing a fresh copy of Kubuntu 14.04 LTS. There were issues, so I installed Kubuntu for a second time. My GRUB menu describes an installation of Windows XP Pro and two separate installations of Kubuntu. How do I delete the first Kubuntu installation and allocate the free space resulting to the second installation of Kubuntu?

KDE Partition Manager has me confused. It gives me error messages about changing partition numbers before I can accomplish a delete. Worse, there is no mention of the 'how to' of dealing with this situation in the Partition Manager Tutorial. What to do? Again, I repeat, I have to delete the first installation of Kubuntu, not the second installation. Thanks For Reading This!

per the error message your partitions are not in numerical order and to delete that partition they must be, run this command as root and then post the output
Code: Select all
fdisk --list

this explains how to reorder you partitions - note: I've never done it so you should Google for confirmation that its correct

you can only add the freed up space (iirc) to an existing partition by either using LVM (you'll need to look it up) or by having 2 adjacent partitions and growing the 1st one

considerations:
- something goes wrong, is your data backed up
- does the re-ordering affect your boot process? for that I'd ask on Kubuntu's forum

Thanks very much for helping me solve my problem. What about disc management in Windows XP Pro? Would it be safe for me to delete the Kubuntu partition I don't want using the Disc Management tool in Windows XP Pro?

do you wish to use Windows to avoid renumbering your partitions? If so I've no idea if that is or isn't a good thing - for that I'd post on Kubuntu's forum
