Your wisdom is needed. After partitioning and doing a Kubuntu 14.04.1 install, I can't get the OS power manager to initialize. how can I access terminal? Must I do a reconfiguration amid initialization? The Acer Aspire boots.
Let me reiterate, messages flash up saying a) updates are available; install now? b) KDE Power Management System can't be initialized. I can open Dolphin, see 747 files and run Libre Office. not sure why the OS will not save to save it to a flash drive or go out via email.

am unsure how to make my new kde install work. No terminal comes up as the OS tries to initialize. Messages flash up saying a) updates are available; install now? b) KDE Power Management System can't be initialized
Dolphin & Libre Office open. I see 747 files. It won't save to a flash drive or email it.

the brute force solution might be to just try a fresh install
your post confuses me a bit "the OS is not initializing" but you "can get into Dolphin"? And you can open Dolphin and LibreOffice but not a terminal (Konsole) window? If you are going to attempt the solution in the referred to thread: -Remember those files need to be edited as root -If you can't see or edit those files in the referred to solution in KDE then you can open a virtual terminal with alt+F1 Alt+Ctrl+F1 and use vi to edit the files (you will not have a graphical environment). You could also run Kubuntu from the cd and edit those file using Kate but make sure you are editing the correct files - the ones on you hard disk partition. -You might also wish to search (and possibly post) on the Kubuntu forum as this isn't a KDE problem if the described solution is correct - those are system files not KDE file. -note: the entries in those files may be specific to Kubuntu as mine are different Interesting that at least 2 out of the 3 devices seeing this are Acer ps - please when referring to other posts provide links to them |

re: terminal windows
- an alternative terminal called xterm may be installed by default, if not in the application menu maybe try accessing it using Alt+F2 - can you access whatever package manager you use? if so try reinstalling Konsole and also possibly finish updating the system re: available updates - not sure of the apt commands but in virtual terminal Alt+Ctrl+F1 you can update the system, though it might not fix your issue(s). Think command is:

- file permissions can be viewed and altered using Dolphin - user and group settings can be edited using Kuser |

kde members mhartigan and wd5nr cite solutions for same message: "KDE Power Management System could not be initialized."
My 14.04 install was done by geeks paid eighty dollars. I tried to correct their work after a message flashed up on all attempts to log in right after the Geek's install. The flashed message said "KDE Power Management System could not be initialized." mhartigan and wd5nr shared solutions on this Forum for what I believe to be the same problem Running a thumb drive instead of a CD (which Mr. Manager recommends", I got no where. I don't know if installer did a good partition. files are present and the former OS 12.04 Ubuntu Studio appears to be gone. Thanks Mr. Manager for your input. Have too much work and cannot solve this now.

1st (and this is about your power management issue
I don't know about this problem and I did not attempt to suggest a solution, what I tried to convey was ways to implement the solution in the thread you referred to since you feel that was a possible solution - it was the the best I could do as I am not familiar with this issue - I try and help to the best of my abilities. I trie to describe for you how to get terminal access to the files described in the mhartigan and wd5nr thread the reason I'm not so sure this is a KDE issue (and yes it might be) is because the solution you refer to is based on Linux system entities not KDE specific ones, also I'm not sure that that would cause you to have a dysfunctional system just to not have power management here's a KDE specific solution to what might be your power management issue https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 5#p1398745
Hi guys, Just in case it helps anyone, I had the same problem, but the solution I have found is different. All I had to do was to go to System Settings --> Startup and Shutdown --> Service Manager (tab) --> Startup Service (lower section). Then you have to make sure the Power Management service is checked and running. In my cause, it was unchecked and stopped, for some reason I don't know. This should be fix the problem. Best regards.
2nd I have no idea what you mean with "nor can I reconfigure to get past a password lock" what lock? if you can get to Dolphin you have access to the system, then what is locked? or is it that you can't enable a screen lock, that might be because you don't have power management. 3rd I don't know what you mean by "the OS is not initializing" those messages don't seem to mean that the system isn't functioning just that a) you need to update various packages b) power management doesn't work which doesn't mean that everything else doesn't and c) not sure what "initialization hanging" refers to, it could be relate to the power management in b) Finally: If you can get into Dolphin and into LibreOffice then you are up and running and if you have pressing work to do you should ignore those things mentioned earlier and focus on whatever critical issues you might be having that are keeping you from being productive - what are those issues? if you can't email then open a new thread in the appropriate forum, if can't get particular programs like Konsole to open then check to make sure they were installed and if not then install them PS - try and keep you posts succinct and to the point, all the extraneous information makes it hard to focus on what are the salient points that need to be addressed |

I'm still confused by " if the window won't open", in KDE the terminal app is Konsole - does Konsole not open? did you not know what was the KDE terminal app? if you type in the Kmenu search field the word terminal does anything show?
if you edited those files and if that was your solution you would need to restart the computer not edit them during boot and note that those being system files they need to be edited as root and if they are improperly changed you could cause many additional problems |

Manager, Let me answer your last question regards internet availability on the acer. Here Wifi is available for my android cell phone and my hardwired PC runs well.
Side by side with my acer laptop hard wired, Firefox has come up today. it let me log in and send an email to my Gmail account. I see no terminal icon displayed I clicked on Software Updates and see a large list of functions to update. A spinning "circle of dots" is turning. But the blue horizontal slide bar progress indicator moves quite slow. The display is a dull grey nor contrasted like my PC. I don't feel confident updates are proceeding. About 25 minutes passed; then I noticed a bright message flashed up then went away. another 20 minutes have passed with a spinning "circle of dots" is turning. The blue horizontal slide bar progress indicator continues to move side to side. I'll give this another 40 minutes but don't feel confident updates are occurring. Not seeing progress, I clicked on "More" and found Advanced highlighted. Clicked on it with no power to alter or to go into an option on the lattice. I did see on one one rung that if you empowered you'd able to i.e., configure Muon update manager; configure shortcuts; Report a bug; or by doing a Ctrl+R you could check for Updates Your guidance on opening xterm and dolphin gave me courage to proceed but no answers yet, Adios, finally I can report a bug.

for terminal:
- left click the Kmenu icon (left most icon on your bottom panel) if you have a search field at the top search for terminal or konsole then click on the result or - alt+F2 and in the window that pops up type konsole and hit return I don't run Kubuntu so its hard for me to work through your issues but it seems to me you have a functioning system with a couple of known known issues: 1) you have a large number of updates, if the current update process doesn't finish try this: - restart KDE - using a hardwired internet connection open a konsole (terminal window) and type:
2) you don't have power management which may be resolved with the updates but this doesn't mean you don't have a functioning system just that things like the system powering down after inactivity won't work nor will sleep, hibernate and actions taken when the lid is closed |
