Plasma screencasts

Sat Jan 31, 2009 8:35 pm
Kourse 2 produced three high-quality screencasts, which show some Plasma features in detail. They can be quite useful for the new user, especially since with Plasma the behavior of the desktop has changed significantly.

The videos are available in both Flash and OGG format. To access the OGG format, click on the link and then select the video format from the combo box ("Unknown file type"), then you'll be able to download it.

Credits go to forum users fengshaun, TeaAge and Primoz.

Some videos are available also in subtitled form:

This zooming interface has got to be the most confusing thing ever invented.
Why is this needed when the The Pager switches between desktops.
Is another level of abstraction warranted?

Plasma indeed introduces another level of abstraction with the zooming interface, the activities. Since KDE 4.3 (and in 4.2 without GUI) you can connect activities with virtual desktops, which is far more natural to normal users. It is not as flexible and intuitive as the currently-in-development GNOME Shell but does allow you to have completely different desktops.

The zooming in plasma should probably be build in to KWin, making it much better performing, good looking and easier to understand.

Still, I think the concept of activities in itself, be it connected to virtual desktops or not, is sound and potentially very powerful. I am looking forward to seeing it evolve over the next few releases...

For those new-ish to plasma, Hans (Mogger) has done a whole series of short screencast how-tos. See them listed at http://userbase.kde.org/Plasma/FAQ/HowTo

I wish it did - the taskbar remains the same in each activity. I'd prefer to set up a different taskbar for each activity - one for straight work with no interference, basically a very basic desktop and one with all the bells and whistles.

Once that is implemented (is it even on the cards? I have no idea...) I would subscribe to the view of "completely different desktops".

Thanks, I found the Panel settings by TeaAge particularly helpful. I had to upgrade Flash before it would play for some reason.
