Akonadi Google Calendar Warning

Wed Jun 09, 2010 12:34 pm
Just a quick warning in the hope that it shows up in searches for people to find it. If you plan to use the Akonadi Google calendar plugin please take note that it can erase your complete Google calendar in the process.

There are plently of bug reports against it like this one: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=212025. I just wish someone would have left a message I could pick up during the Google search since things like that really are a PITA.

Wow! Thank you so much for pointing that out. I was just looking around to find tips to successfully use Google calendar in my KDE PIM. We have a group calendar at our chair. That would have been very ... un-nice, if I'd delete all our appointments.

Grrrr... I just lost my Google Calendar! I wasn't aware of this bug and it appears that developers still haven't fixed it (or disabled it) in KDE 4.4.5. BEWARE!!!!

If anyone knows a way to recover it... please let me know. I read in Google help that a calendar can sometimes be recovered if the exact name is used again. So I thought it might work to add the Akonadi link again, but it uses the # after the deleted one (as it may be that Akonadi didn't actually delete the file... there were errors that it couldn't delete) So if I can manually change the name of this non-deleted file, let me know. Thanks.

I couldn't figure out how to revive my Google calendar so I had to re-insert all my appointments, a painful process.

Very unfortunate, as I don't backup Google Calendars (I backup my local HD) and I won't be able to remember all my apts. :(
I've made my comments on the bug link you referred to... hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Please note that the Akonadi Google Resource is not shipped as a component of KDE SC itself, it is shipped in KDE Extragear.

That's odd, I did a package search for "extragear" and I don't have anything like this installed. I only install Kubuntu Lucid about a week ago and just added the repository for KDE 4.4.5... but there are no extragear apps installed that I am aware of.

Extragear is a reference to where the source code is located in KDE SVN. You will not find an "extragear" package as such therefore. Note that applications such as Amarok, Digikam and K3b are all part of KDE Extragear modules.

Thanks for the explanation bcooksley... I understand now... and I see that there is a separately maintained site for this gcalendar resource: http://code.google.com/p/libgcal/ There also appears to be a newer version of this extragear package available for download at this site, but I haven't tried it. (BTW, while perusing this info I found that the most resent version still will only work with one (or the primary) Google calendar.)
