If you haven't noticed it yet, there is a simple calculator which you can access at almost any time.
1. Press ALT + F2. 2. Type in your calculation, for example: = 5 *88 3. Press enter. Do not forget the starting equal sign (=), otherwise it won't work. I'm not completely sure when this came, but it works in KDE 4.5.1. Example: http://simplest-image-hosting.net/jpg-0 ... ktopzx1606 |

I think it has been there since the beginning (4.0.0).
Also, you can put the = sign at the beginning or end. Putting at the end might be better for very complicated calculations since that means the actual calculation will not be done until the end, while if you put = at the beginning it will update the calculation as you type. Having it update as you type is fine for simple stuff but may be slow for complicated calculations. Also, if you press enter it will take the result and replace the existing text with it, complete with the = symbol, so you can do more calculations on the result. You can also include units in the calculation, like = 1m+1ft
