Ciao a tutti,
ho un fastidioso problema da un mese a questa parte, da quando ho installato Kubuntu Precise. Ogni tanto, senza che riesca a trovare un collegamento fra gli avvenimenti (in realtà un paio di volte mi è successo impostando la luminosità dello schermo dall'icona batteria nel pannello, ma non mi sembra un gran indizio) il desktop si freeza completamente. Rimangono solo attivi i tasti funzione sulla tastiera, tipo il mute/unmute e l'interruttore della scheda wireless. Per il resto, pulsante on/off, mouse, tastiera, login remoto con ssh, e quindi anche console virtuali con ctrl+alt+Fn non posso usarli.
Ora io credo sia un problema dovuto alla grafica (non so esattamente quale componente) , e so bene che può essere qualsiasi cosa.

Quali sono i registri e i file di log giusti dove cercare qualcosa?? dmesg e il registro di X.org sono infiniti ma contengono centinaia di righe error senza che siano fatali....

Preciso che: mi succedeva anche con kde 4.8.2 (ho aggiornato via kubuntu-ppa)
Ho testato i banchi Ram a fondo e sono perfetti

dopo il reboot trovi in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old il log del server x

posta il contenuto di quel file, se è troppo grande mettilo su pastebin

anche il log di kdm è utile se puoi posta anche quello.

quale tipo di composizione usi? opengl o raster?

Uso la render OpenGL, la usavo anche con Kubuntu Oneiric e mai dato questo problema (stesso pc con stesso hardware ovviamente)

Io ho esattamente lo stesso problema. Da quando ho fatto l'upgrade ad Ubuntu Precise, di tanto in tanto (piu' di una volta al giorno) il computer si pianta completamente. Mouse, tastiera, SysRq ed ssh non funzionano e capita anche lasciando il computer da solo. Succede sia con KDE che con Unity. Ho provato a reinstallare il kernel 3.0.0, ma il problema si ripete comunque. Adesso ho reinstallato Xorg 1.10.4 (Ubuntu Precise ha l'1.11.3) per vedere se e' un problema del driver grafico. Non sembra che il computer lasci nessun log utile. Il freeze e' totale ed improvviso. Questo problema e' veramente fastidioso. Trovo almeno un po' di conforto nel sapere che non sono solo. Il poco che posso dire e' che uso il driver i915 ed il mio laptop e' un Dell Vostro V131 di ultima generazione.

Gli errori di Xorg sono quelli indicati con (EE), ma le uniche cose che ho trovato sono queste:
