Hello and hallo.
I'm currently trying to learn some KDevelop basics, and for this purpose I found a great instruction page on the KDE wiki. At least that's what I thought it was yesterday and today I went crazy trying to find that page again. Turns out there are several KDE wikis. There's a Community Wiki, a Techbase, a Userbase... this is all very confusing for one simple reason: They all look the same! The header bar, the site layout, everything is designed to look exactly alike, save for the little logo in the corner. Now that is confusing. If you're suddenly working on an entirely separate system, you should have a clear visual clue (a simple psychological effect, helps your brain to tell the difference between several things). Can we do something about that? I was trying to search for the KDevelop page on the Community Wiki and stumbled on this completely unfinished broken and left page: http://community.kde.org/KDevelop Then I was trying to find it on the Techbase, but turns out that one is for developers, not users of KDE applications. There should be a central overview of the different kinds of wikis you have running and a simple and easy way to switch between them in the Wiki header. |

If you are looking for documentation aimed at the users you should have a look at http://userbase.kde.org
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Thank you, But my point is that telling the wikis apart (or even finding out which exist) should not be a task. It should be immediately evident.

Hi Cobold
Thanks for your input. We are a large community and need many different wikis for a variety of purposes. Anyone seeking information about KDE software should generally start at http://userbase.kde.org - that is the wiki for users. All other wikis a mostly for contributors, even though anyone is welcome to visit them, of course. In case you didn't find the KDevelop pages, this link is a good place to start: http://userbase.kde.org/KDevelop4/Manual We are constantly trying to improve the wikis, but it is not a simple matter. The look of the wikis actually require much work. |

I know, I'm quite familiar with mediawiki editing, including as a content administrator/sysop (but not as an interface designer). I think there should be some kind of Wiki logo or color coding or header or navigation link to tell them apart easily. I'm not trying to get more information for myself, but improve the experience for users who might have the same problem, and are not as familiar with mediawiki to find the solution - that the wikis are actually separate is not immediately apparent to laymen.

It shouldn't take that long anymore, until we have finished a new look for the wikis, this forum, the main site and any other KDE site. Issues like that can/will be solved then.
Until then, watch the URL you entered ![]() |
