I'm using gentoo now. After upgrading to kde 4.9, I kde failed to start

Oh, I have find a useful information. The problem was caused by kwin. I find that plasma fail safe and kde/openbox works well while plasma workspace doesn't work.

can you create a new user a test it?
can you rename ~/.kde[4]/share/config/kwinrc and then restart kwin in a Konsole window to see what errors appear

It seems that X is crashing at some point during the KDE startup period. This is possibly due to KWin enabling compositing and triggering a bug in the X drivers your system is using.

It works now. Thank you very much. What's strange is that I do have an i915 graphic card, but adding i915 to VIDEO_CARDS leads to failure.

Interesting, i915 is the name of both the kernel and X drivers on my system... good to hear it was fixed none the less.
Does your system have accelerated graphics?
