Both application are KDE applications, so well integrated.
It totally depends what features you want, you can read that up here: http://kde.org/applications/office/skrooge/ and here: http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net/index-home.html
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

I tried both some time back and I found that while kmymoney didn't have too many features, it was pretty rock solid and had a more intuitive feel to its UI. Skrooge has lots of flashy bits—a plasma dashboard, for instance—but its UI felt unintuitive to me. It'll yet become a powerhouse application, but it is (or was, when I tried it) a bit rough.
I'd love to hear a more current opinion, if you report after trying both out!

KMyMoney is suitable for private money; I have been using it since 2005 and only encountered one bug - in 2006 - which was fixed by the time I reported it. Not sure what you mean about calendar - the default report gives income/expenditure by month but you can change that to day or week.

for me the make-or-break question is: do you use multiple currencies?
If yes, currently, kmymoney is the better option because it uses double entry accounting and in general has better multiple currency support. Because of double entries, each account will register the exact amount of the transaction at the time, instead of "account2_entry = account1_entry * exchange_rate". So if you live in a euro area and go to London and withdraw money from your account, your single entry for the transaction will show as: - on the euro checking account: 100EUR transfer to GBP cash account + X.YY EUR banking fee, (split category transaction) - on the gbp cash account: 87.34GBP because you entered it that way (as in the money you actually got) and the exchange rate will be calculated accordingly (and transparently) from what i've seen the last time i tried skrooge, it will automatically register the GBP amount as 100 * current_eur_to_gbp_exchange_rate, and it will change ove time, it will not be what you actually got in hand at the time. it's a pity because skrooge seems pretty good otherwise. Kmymoney has a few minor annoyances (especially when dealing with past transactions that you want changed, moved into new categories, etc) but definitely gets the job done. |
