Hello everyone,
I really like the functions of opendesktop.org and it's integration in KDE to download and install wallpapers, programms, templates and so on. But the homepage itself (http://www.opendesktop.org) is really awful. From my poind of view it's hard du use, there is way too much advertisment and it seems, that there is no support/administraton. E.g. 6 months ago some one posted that openid-Support is broken. Til today nothing has changed so far. All in all I'm unsatisfied with opendesktop.org. What do you think about it, do you agree? Is it possible to host something similar by KDE? |

It is really hard to complain about a service that uses ads to pay for it's maintenance. If the ads bother you you could install/enable an adblocker but remember this from their "about" page:
I always use kde-apps.org and kde-look.org as they're exclusively KDE focused. You can contact them direct at this page http://opendesktop.org/feedback/ and the site hoster here http://hive01.com/contact/ in regard openid-Support |

Of course such a platform needs ads to refinance. Some days ago I uploaded a software I wrote. And when you use words like "KDE" or "Version" in your description, these words automatilally become links and refer to some external sites. Sorry, but I don't want that in the description I wrote ads are placed. That's too much if you ask me. And last but not least this really looks dubious, like one of these sites where you can download smileys and screensavers infected with malware. Even in the legal notice words are linked to ads … that's ridiculous !
opendesktop.org is hostet by a german enterprise. What will happen when they close the platform one day, because they don't earn any money anymore? A lot of great work will be lost and the "get new stuff" part of KDE becomes useless. This would be very sad. You've posted the site of the hoster and i took a look. The last activity on their site and twitter account was two years ago. There doesn't seem to be much activity … So I contacted them for the purpose of reporting the problem with open id. Even in the contact form the world "email" is linked to ads. This is really a bad joke and dubious … |
