Hi!
I am new here. I found this problem and couldn't find an answer on Google. Start on some time, ALL file browsers started to launch slow EVERYTIME on my machine. I use Funtoo, with kde 4.9.2. Now I found one thing interesting: I use kdm as session manager. If it is the first launch of kdm(while booting), this problem occurs; if otherwise I restart kdm:
this problem disappears. Anyone knows why this happends? THX!! |

That is highly unusual that simply restarting KDM would solve this problem.
Can you compare the list of processes between two sessions to see if some difference (like Nepomuk startup progression or similar) which could possibly explain this?

Hi
So these are the processes of two sessions(command run from tty1): Before restarting:
After restart:
how do processes affect starting time of applications? BTW, after restart, not only kde programs, but also EVERY other applications (such as chromium) can be started in a flash(first startup)! I think this must be related to kde or kdm somehow...I will check another xdm too. |

Sometimes everything is fine... like the boots these two days caused no problem at all. Can't figure out why.

Feel free to post back here if the issue recurs - it seems to have resolved itself for now.
As for the process list - I suspected that a system wide service (such as Wicd) may not have finished starting up when the desktop was started, leading to other unanticipated failures and the slow startup time of file management applications such as Dolphin and Krusader.

Yes, I think there should be some services that should be started up before kdm started later. However, I am still looking for a way to find that service. BTW, my Funtoo box never successfully compiled system-config-printer-kde. I'm not sure if that is related to the problem.

system-config-printer-kde is not essential at all - it is simply a printer applet (and is deprecated and replaced with something more reliable and with less dependencies in KDE 4.10)
The fact that system processes take some time to start up as well could indicate issues at the system level which also impacts KDE (such as the lo interface not being setup).

Well...according to my tests and observation, maybe kmix is the problem. Everytime when this issue occurs kmix is not started. The problem of system-config-kde is caused by pycurl and the failure stopped Gentoo from updating all kde packages. Each of this may be the reason of this problem. I need to test more.

KMix is an extremely odd suspect - as there is no interconnect between KMix and Dolphin / Krusader - the systems they manage and work with to do their jobs are completely different. Only thing I can think of is "kmixd" which runs as part of kded4 having problems when the KMix GUI application is not running.

Very strange. it seems that if kmix does not start after the gear around the cursor stops bouncing this problem occurs. Maybe kmix-gui causes some problems in services. Also Klipper doesn't seem like starting when this problem shows up.

To try and isolate this, open System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager. In "Startup Services", make sure "KMixD" is unchecked, then logout and back in again. Make sure KMix is not set to start on login. Then try to reproduce.

Hi, I have same problem after login I get a busy cursor and kmix and klipper don't start and opening Dolphin is extremely slow. The only fix for me is Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and login again then everything works flawlessly.
I'm using openSuse 12.2 with kde 4.10 latest RC but the problem exists from KDE 4.9 Does someone managed to solved it ? BTW when the problem happens when I go to System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager I get message "Unable to contact KDED" and the screen become grey. After X reboot and when kmixd is started ok I can go there and to modify startup services. |

This is definitely an indication that D-Bus or KDE Daemon (kded4) is having trouble.
To the best of my knowledge, a solution has not yet been found. Under a working configuration, can you try the suggestion I made above (namely, to disable KMixD)?
