Newb question

Tue Mar 19, 2013 5:31 am
Hello,

I am new to KDE and new to Linux as well. I "thought" I was an advanced windows user, but coming over to linux, I feel like a newb again.

I was looking for a way to add the "set image as desktop wallper" in the context menu...I mean service menu. The old windows habits are hard to die.

Anyway, I found this tutorial http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Creating_Konqueror_Service_Menus and was able to create the menu, only to find out I didn't read the very top note which says some of the code only applies to KDE 3. I am running KDE 4.10. So it obviously does not work.

I did seach it out and read that KDE switched over to dbus instead of dcop, which I am not familiar with either. Is there anyway somebody could direct me to where I can find the code needed to get this service menu to work with KDE 4 or if somebody knows the code, maybe you can post it so I can add it to this tuturial to make it work. I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your time

as best as I can determine it's not as trivial as in KDE 3.5

I appreciate the help.

I know you can drag and drop on to the desktop but I was just looking for the service menu. I am not a coder so that post is way over my head.

Well the documentation from techbase would work if there would be a DBUS interface to set the wallpaper. As far as I can tell from searching the web there is no DBUS interface to set the wallpaper yet. I found a proposed patch but it has some issues which need to be fixed. So for now setting the wallpaper via service menu is not possible using that method. Sorry.
