Hi,
My first post in this form is about KDM. I am currently trying to set up my laptop (with KDE and KDM as a login manager) for loggin authentication with smart card. I have actually set up my system successfully - during login i need to type in my username and the PIN code for my smart card. If I enter the correct PIN code I log in successfully and if I enter a wrong PIN code i receive the corresponding error message. Alternatively I can log in with my password. The problem is that the login process is not exactly polished - what I mean is that after I enter my PIN code there are several pop-up messages like "Starting smart card authentication", "Checking for certificate", etc.. The problem with these messages is that they are not automatically dismissed - meaning that they show in a pop up window and I have to click on OK on each of these messages in order to dismiss it and continue with the login process. Even though there is no other option than clicking "OK" unless I manually click "OK" the process does not continue and I'm stuck. Compared to this GDM is much more polished - when I insert the usb key it automatically detects it and says that I need to enter my PIN code and after that all of the messages are displayed not in seperate pop-up windows which I have to manually dismiss but as a text under the login field and there is no need for my intervation. In fact this is exactly how the new QML based lock screen in KDE works as well - all of the messages are displayed but not as pop-up windows which I have to manually dismiss but as text above password (in this case PIN code) field. Is there any way for me to make these messages automatically disappear. I've read the KDM handbook but found no such option. |

Unfortunately I suspect there is no such option, nor is there a way to workaround this unfortunately.
One thing you could do is try LightDM as your display manager, instead of KDM, which should be styled fairly similar to the screen locker used by KDE itself if I recall correctly.

As mentioned, KDM doesn't support "automatic dismissal" of these messages, so you will need to try a different desktop manager (such as LightDM), or develop a patch to provide for automatic dismissal. The KDM codebase can be found at git://anongit.kde.org/kde-workspace in the "kdm" folder.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately I cannot code so I won't be able to patch KDM myself. It is not a big problem anyway, I just tought that maybe I'm missing something.
Of the display managers I tried GDM works perfectly, KDM works very good, it's just anoying that I have to dismiss the messages and LightDM works as well but doesn't show any messages at all. For the time being I'll stick with KDM. |
