Mac OS style desktop menu (and other KDE 4 niggles)

I'm still using KDE 3. I tried KDE 4 (on Debian) several weeks ago and, as well as the usual complaints about unstableness, found a few other niggles. Just thought I'd share them in case anyone else wanted to agree or disagree.

The main one was that I really like the Mac OS style desktop menu option in KDE which puts the menu bars from KDE applications into a panel-like object at the top of the screen. On my very small laptop screen every piece of pixel real estate counts and so this features is very helpful. (I also have the K menu in the left hand corner of that menubar panel, the desktop pager after the menu, followed by the systray and the clock. I have no panels anywhere else and have no taskbar. I use ALT+TAB or ALT+F5 to switch between applications. This also saves some screen space.)

Related to this was another (minor) niggle: the panel plasmoids (is that the correct terminology) seem to be quite chunky. It's nice not to have too much space taken up my widget decoration.

My other main niggle is the khotkeys doesn't seem to work for custom keybindings. I'm used to having things like CTRL+ALT+W to start Konqueror. Of course, there are other tools which will replicate this behaviour, but it would be quite nice to use khotkeys properly.

I didn't try Katapult on KDE 4. I wonder if that works? It's easily one of my favourite KDE components. Sort of.

Cheers.

There is a thread on this topic: showthread.php?tid=10019&highlight=menubar

You can resize the panel. You cannot autohide the panel in KDE 4.1, but this feature will be available in KDE 4.2.

AFAIK krunner has replaced it. You can type different kind of actions, when clicking Alt+F2, i.e. "=3+5" to calculate the sum of 3 and 5.

Cheers, m.

KHotkeys is yes, broken. It has so many issues, and yet nothing on the 4.2 feature plan. A redesign however has been committed but custom gestures / conditions will follow later and are currently unsupported.

I miss the feature of Katapult: if there is a menu item "Firefox Web Browser" in Kmenu, I can type 'web' or type 'browser' to active it.

In krunner, it seems that I cannot type keywords start from the second or third word. Any hints?

I'm running kde4.2svn and when I type web it brings me firefox and konqueror. As well as some other internet related options. Try messing with krunner's settings.
