I am tring out KUBUNTU on a live DVD-R

I am not keen on the widgets, or activity, can they be removed?

I can't seem to form windows to place icons in?

Can I change the background colours and tile bar colours of the Windows (if that is the correct terminology)?

I logged in successfully to my ISP, but on another occasion, I could not seem to connect. If this occurs again, how can I return to
re-inputting the router password?

Is KUBUNTU the best K environment to use professiuonally?

What is the reasoning behind the design of KDE?

Is there a relationship between Windows and KDE, in terms of look and feel?

I Have 1 GB of RAM, but things seem to work.

When using the default browser, Libre Office writer hung when activating from rekonquer. Is there an incompatibility,
Writer work well as stand alone?

Is it likely that KUBUNTU will work more efficiently when installed because it will the have a memory cache partition (not available as live DVD).

Not keen on the grey boot up screen. I assume that this not configurable?

Thanks - for now.

Yes.

Sorry, I don't get what you're asking.

anonprivate wrote:Can I change the background colours and tile bar colours of the Windows (if that is the correct terminology)?
Yes.

As far as I know your router either is connected to the Internet or it isn't. Are you talking wireless? If so, click on the wireless icon in the taskbar to show all available networks and take it from there.

Impossible to answer. Depends on your requirements/needs.

anonprivate wrote:What is the reasoning behind the design of KDE?
Cos it is nice and extremely configurable?

anonprivate wrote:Is there a relationship between Windows and KDE, in terms of look and feel?
There are certain similarities and from I have heard win9 will catch up to some extent.

Nice :)

No experience of that. Try Firefox as your standard browser.

Yes.

I prefer boot messages rather than bling. It is configurable but you may want to get to grips with more basic things in the meantime. Install it, play around with the system and check in with the folks over at http://www.kubuntuforum.net - the Kubuntu experts :)

Have fun and explore!

PS.: You will always have a better chance of getting a proper answer if you ask a specific question. I'd therefore suggest prioritising your questions and work through them one by one. Open ended questions such as Windows/KDE similarity or "is it the best" cannot be answered - you will have to make up your own mind. There is enough stuff on that on the Internet. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your Kubuntu experience!

Thank you for responding.

I asked a number of questions in this post in order to cover a lot of ground initially - get a feel for things. Your suggestion regarding indvidual posts is well made.

I am finding it very difficult to decide on the flavour of Linux.

Most peple seem to use UBUNTU, but KUBUNTU is more configurable.

It's probably me, but I get the impression that KUBUNTU is designed for the young, with all the widgets and large icons, which I find unappealing. If I remove them, could I re-activate them, or are they lost. Can I replace them?

What about stability. I mean good coding that prevents crashes etc. Is KUBUNTU as well coded as UBUNTU, which I believe has a longer history and is therfore more likely to be reliable.

As stated, I am using KUBUNTU ver 12 with 1 GB of RAM. I wonder if I could run 14. I know it needs to be tried, but I am trying to avoid making endless DVD's.

Bye for now

A

Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29 to get an idea.

No wonder you are having difficulty choosing your distro - there are some who keep changing after 12 years of linux :)

Why not download different isos and try them out? You don't have to burn a DVD each time but can put them on a usb stick instead. I cannot remember the name of the windows programme but google will know.

Thanks for responding.

You said that the individaul windows could be customised for background colour and title bar. I looked hard, but could not find the option. Can you advise?

In addition, can I change the icons, is so please advise?

I am running kubuntu from a dvd-r.

Usually, it starts without a problem, but occasionally, I have a problem, For example, I reieived a message telling me that kubuntu was waiting for a network configuration, and that it would boot without this configuration. It did not, I had to restart. Any idea why odd problems like these occcur?

Do you know the type of user that kunbuntu was designed for - presumably the developers had people in mind. configurators goes without saying.

Best wishes.

In this case your ~ (read /home) directory is not persistent. This is the place where customisation, personal preferences, anything not to to with the system gets stored. So no point changing anything 'cos with the next reboot it is gone again. For icons etc. use systemsettings - application appearance - icons - get new themes. For other customisation options go into systemsettings - workspace appearance and play around with that. For all other open-ended questions just play around until you have a definite how to question.

Best to ask at http://www.kubuntuforums.net

I haven't got a clue. It is open source and therefore fluid and constantly on the move. Certain parameters are set, of course. Best use Wikipedia to get an idea. Apart from KDE also check Gnome, XFCE and Mate to name but a few.

Have fun exploring!
