Bearing in mind that KDE is the interface, does it really matter which is the underlying Linux?

maybe depending on your needs/wants as there are differentiating factors between distros such as:
- frequency of upgrades
- how bleeding edge is the kernel and packages
- how long a version is supported
- selection of packages
- ease of use
- package management used
- support options
- community
- etc ........
