Using the latest ATI proprietary driver on an ATI Radeon 3870, with desktop effects enabled, all the window resize operations are laggy. The latest fglrx driver does _not_ support the Radeon 3870, only HD5000 and up. If you have it installed anyway, this can of course cause all sorts of problems, as it overrides some of Xorg's and Mesa's libraries (libglx and libGL in particular). Or is the "latest" driver you are using as old as KDE 4.1.4? It did still support the HD 3870 back then...

That would suggest that kwin is crashing. Try to restart it. (kwin or kwin_x11 if using Plasma5) And you are using 4.1.4 as well? Or why are you asking here? Better open a new thread for your problem.
