I give up on KDEPIM4. I'm going back to KDEPIM3. It works.

I've made a huge investment of time recently to try to make the current version of KDEPIM 4 as shipped with OpenSuSe 13.1, 4.11.5. work reliably. I managed to get it working on a 13.1 laptop, and merely wanted to migrate the install to a desktop. Should be fairly straightforward, right?

Even using the procedure outlined in the program - i.e. went to tools, exportkmaildata, backupdata, clicked in each option box for everything, saved the zip file. When I unzipped the file on the other computer the mail folders were missing, the calendar .ics files are missing, as are the addressbooks. The data backup program simply doesn't work, and asking what a better procedure would be in the kde community forums never did get an answer.

There isn't any way to setup distribution lists, and instead of having categories within the address books, now I'm expected to use separate address books for each category, which means that when people overlap the address files because they may be included in more than one category, when I open the address books I get multiple copies for the same person. In my receive folders I get multiple copies of the same message.

As a consequence, I've reverted to the KDEPIM which was shipped with KDE3. It works.

I get one file for my addressbook with categories, so each person only shows up once, making the file easier to update. My distribution lists are back. I don't get multiple copies of messages and it's easy to move from one computer to another - just copy the appropriate .kde/share/apps and .kde/share/config files to the new computer and reinstall KDE3. Voila - everything is there!

I was really hoping that by this late date, KDEPIM4 would be ready to use. My conclusion is that it's not, which is truly unfortunate.

I am sorry that you gave up on PIM, although you never said if the suggestions provided in the opensuse ML and the forum worked. I would also add that PIM 4.11.x is old and no longer supported upstream, meaning that some issues may have been solved in recent versions.

I would also like to add that the PIM 3 that "worked" had longstanding issues that required change: filters would block the whole program (see with spamassassin) and there were critical bugs that destroyed mail (I got hit by one of them, repeatedly) until the fixes from the "entrprise3" branch were merged.

P.S.: I'm moving this thread to the Discussions and Opinions forum, as the forum for PIM is mainly for support.

Thanks for the reply, Einar. Although I read both the KDE Forums and the Opensuse Forums, and looked for answers everywhere I could, and tried to make KDEPIM migrate properly, I never could. I kept getting duplicate emails, and the kmail data backup never did work properly. And PIM 4.11 is NOT old - it is the version that comes with OpenSuse 13.1 which is a current distribution, although 13.2 has just come out. I don't think it's too much to expect that by the 11th iteration that KDEPIM works properly - it should be easy to migrate from one computer to another.

I don't understand the other issue you raised regarding PIM 3 - I've used it for something like 10 years now with clamav and bogofilter filters without problems, nor has my mail been destroyed.

Let me be clear, here. I like most of KDE4 - I like it's look, and feel, and even though I use KDEPIM3 as my PIM I still use KDE4 as my desktop on Opensuse 13.1. I'm disappointed that the KDEPIM 4 did not work for me, and really tried to make it work. I still miss features I think are lacking in KDEPIM4 - like the ability to create distribution lists, and I really dislike the address book arrangement that forces me to create different address books for each category of addressee, in spite of the fact that many of my correspondents are in more than one category.

I really hope that when we get to KDEPIM5, KDEPIM is more than an afterthought for the developers, and that a polished, fully working version comes out.
