Downloading Skype (& Other Programmes)

So can anyone out there or in there tell me how to download Skype for Linux. I require full step by step details as i am not computer literate. I am new to Linux and am having some problems navigating my way around. I seem to have the download in my DOWNLOAD file but when i click on it it says cannot activate or something like that. It is the same with other programmes i have downloaded. They appear in the download heading in folders but do not activate when i click on them. HELP LINUX COMPUTER ANGEL needed

In general you should see check your distributions web page for instructions on how to install programs as different distributions use different methods of distributing applications
