Amd FX or Intel Core?

Sat Mar 28, 2015 10:21 am
Hi, does Kde (I mean applications, libraries, frameworks, workspace, ecc.) is in general better optimized for Amd FX cpu series or Intel Core (Haswell)? Does kde works better in a 8 multicore system (but slower in single core) or in a 4 multicore system (but faster in single core)?

Thanks

Hi,

KDE is not optimized for a specific sort of CPU from my knowledge. It is up to the compiler and the system's scheduler to optimize things for CPUs.
Both CPUs you mentioned are x86 architecture, that means they don't really differ in regards of compiler optimizations. Unless you are planning to use Gentoo, your Linux distribution will likely ship binary x86 packages which have already been compiled for that architecture, which will make good use of either of the mentioned CPUs.

My opinion on the rest:
  • A good single core performance is always preferable since most applications benefit from that more than from multiple cores (at least when comparing 4 to 8 cores)
  • If you are not planning on doing heavy GPU stuff (gaming, rendering) I highly recommend getting a good Intel CPU which has an integrated graphics (like Intel HD 4000) instead of a dedicated graphics card
  • The support for Intel's integrated graphics on Linux is splendid and it is powerful enough for casual usage (e.g. 1080p video are no problem at all)

I think you need to consider your workflow:
- how many simultaneous cores do you forecast on using
- how many of your apps are multi-threaded
- are your apps data or cpu intensive, if data then ssd's and raid should be considered
- are any of your needs gpu intensive

Personally I don't do much so a dual core suffices 95% of the time and cpu power is more important then number of cores
