Problem with the mouse

Fri Jun 19, 2015 6:54 pm
When I log into my server (OS Oracle Linux 7) and run startkde everything looks OK and my mouse works fine, but when I open a window - the mouse turns to a window width adjuster and I can no longer select anything. I can't minimize, maximize, or close a window. I can't highlight any text on the terminal window, though I can paste text.

This goes for applications and for basic routines. I only have this problem with this (and only) installation of KDE. I have other servers with KDE that run just fine.

I don't see any errors.

You're help is much appreciated!

Which exact KDE version is it you run on that computer? I don't know Oracle Linux, all I could find was that it was probably some sort of CentOS clone, so I fear the KDE you are running is rather old.
FWIW: any KDE application can tell you the version in the Help menu -> About KDE section

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Oracle Linux is a Redhat derivative.
I'm running KDE 4.10.5

Astoningly new for a RedHat derivative, but still a rather old KDE, as the current KDE4 version release is 4.14.x

Did you check it is not the mouse? Try connecting another mouse to see if you have the same issues, sometimes certain mice need special drivers that are not always included by default. From my experience, most current mice do work rather well, where you can run into trouble are gaming-mice with specific drivers.

Thanks for your reply. I connect remotely using winAxe. The mouse on my PC is the same simple, default DELL mouse as the one I use on the console, which does work.

Could it be related to the fact you connect remotely?

Yes, I'm certain it has to do with logging in remotely. However, I remotely log into several servers running Solaris 10 and Linux 21, but don't have this problem. I really do need to connect remotely, and before I upgraded to Oracle Linux 7.1 I did without this problem.

I don't know what to change to get the mouse to behave like it should.

thanks in advance for your help! I'm rather frustrated that I can't get gnome to work because of the well-known hardware acceleration problem that plagues gnome 3 and the dearth of other desktops on Oracle Linux.
