Hi there,
although I like KDE and its spirit in general, there are a few things that bother me with its default setup. They become obvious when compared to other tools provided by e.g. Linux Mint. Don't know if these are KDE or Kubuntu's fault though. KUser: In KDE there is no tool in the control panel to configure users and groups. The tool I found can only configure users. Adding users to groups, creating groups etc. is not possible. This is irritating because groups are an integral part of Linux. Linux Mint on the other hand comes with a tool in its control panel to configure both -- users and groups. Of course there is KUser but it is not installed by default and not part of the control panel, although users and groups are core elements of Linux. Muon: Why is muon not shipped by default? Kubuntu comes with an application to install other applications. However, IMO this is not a replacement for a proper package manager (such as muon). Sharing directories with samba. In dolphin one can install samba (cool). One can share folders (cool). And if I try to access this folder it will fail, because my linux-user is not part of the samba group (uncool). Why is the linux-user that installs samba not added to the samba group automatically? It should be possible to do so as part of the installation from within dolphin. There isn't a samba config tool in the control panel as well. I don't see the point in providing a simple to use and efficient GUI to share folders in dolphin if one needs to google and configure samba afterwards anyway. Dolphin: Is there an option such that dolphin will always show the current path starting from my home directory or root? Currently if I create a shortcut in its left sidebar and go into this folder, the path displayed in dolphin starts in this folder. I don't like this behaviour. In contrast, nemo always displays the current folder relative to my home dir. Covers in audio files: I don't know why dolphin does not show covers of audio files. I found this plugin: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Au ... ent=114885 but why is it not part of the default installation? These covers make it easier to browse large music libs. Plus it just looks better. Further, it is already common practice in other browsers (Windows explorer, Linux Mint nemo). The audio files are standardized and widely accepted, which shows in the word 'MP3-Player' so I don't know why this could not be integrated to the dolphin core. Another topic is the dropbox integration. I can understand that this should not be a default in dolphin as it might be unfair for other companies. (anyway, nemo has a perfect dropbox integration. And the kubuntu installation process advertises that it is easy to install Steam on Kubuntu...) Next dolphin issue is the root actions service menu. Why is this not default in dolphin? Every computer system needs administration. And when I have a GUI to do so, it is easier because I don't need to open a console anymore to edit a file in /etc or run an installer. The nemo browser features an 'open as root' button already as default (Although the root actions service menu in dolphin is actually superior). Further this behaviour is known by Windows users, so adding the service menu to dolphin as default would make it easier for Linux newcomers. I would have found it useful anyway. Other cool thing in Linux Mint is that my dektop background is used as screen lock background as well (Ctlr+Alt+L). And when other displays are connected to my PC, they also use this image. Anyway this is a minor issue. Another issue I have is also present in Linux Mint: I am not able to create a file association via 'Right Click' > 'Open With' (like in Windows). This should be a valid option IMO. |

Kusers - distro decision, there's a thread somewhere iirc (maybe Kubuntu forum)
Muon - again distro decision Samba - your Linux-user did not install it, root did by way of the package manager. not sure why there should (or not) be a KCM but there is an app called Smb4k that may be what you're looking for Dolphin - in Dolphin settings check "show full path in location bar", at least I think that's what you want No idea bout the following but probably design decisions and should be asked in Dolphin forum - Covers - - Dropbox - there is a service menu (3rd party?) and an app Kfilebox - Root actions Steam - ask Mint why but if Kubuntu can then they probably can Screen lock - no idea File assoc - open with -> other -> select preferred app & check remember |

Yes and no. This does change the application for the file type that the file is currently recognized as, which is a reasonable option to have in the dialog. I have two issues with this: 1. it does not tell which association is acutally changed (e.g. html files). 2. it is not what I want. What I want is to create a new file type based on the file extension and associate it with the choosen application. To illustrate, think about xml files. Normally I want to open xml files with my text editor. But it is a generic file format that is used by other applications to persist data. For such an application the xml file might have a different extension so that it can be recognized easily. Now, when I check remember in the current open with dialog, it will not only change the app for this specific application but also for all other xml files. Thus other xml files will not be opened with my text editor anymore. An example for this is the .graphml file format used by the graph editor yEd. It is basically an xml file so when I right click > open with > remember all other xml files are opened using yEd as well. But I want to create an association for the .graphml file type (without creating it manually in the system settings of course. All required information can be taken from the open with dialog). See also Bug 353521 (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353521)
How did I not see this option? Many thanks! |

File associations in Linux tend to use mime type unlike file extension as used in Windows, see:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... 1508#71508 http://www.howtogeek.com/192628/mime-ty ... xtensions/ Seems you could create your own mime types based on extension, in that case you might need to use the FIle Association kcm to associate a program with it (can also use it to create it). No idea how well it will work when the file type is already assigned a mime type. An example of creating a new mime type https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddingMimeTypes |

Yes. One can do so using the kde control panel. However, what I'm asking for is a shortcut to do this as part of the open with dialog. Not as replacement for the other options but as an additional one. This would be more convenient and may help users coming from Windows. |

request should be made as wishlists on bugs.kde.org or in the Brainstorm Forum which provides a for the community to show interest in an idea
